Module power consumption and total power consumption

Total power consumption

The total power consumption equals the power consumption of all cards plus the fan tray power consumption:

·     The minimum total power consumption equals the minimum static power consumption of all cards plus the minimum fan tray power consumption.

For example, an SR8805-F has two CSR07SRPUA1 MPUs, three CSPC-XP2LA1 cards, and one SR8805-F fan tray. Its minimum total power consumption is 2 × 49 + 3 × 43 + 16 = 243 W.

·     The maximum total power consumption equals the maximum dynamic power consumption of all cards plus the maximum fan tray power consumption.

For example, the maximum total power consumption of an SR8805-F is 2 × 75 + 3 × 75 + 28 = 403 W.

To install a card into an operating device, make sure the remaining output power of the device is equal to or greater than 250 W. Otherwise, the card cannot operate correctly. The remaining output power equals the maximum output power minus the total power consumption.

For a router to successfully start up, make sure its total power consumption meets the following requirements:

·     Does not exceed the maximum output power of the power supply on the router when the power supply mode is backup.

·     Does not exceed the total maximum output power of both power supplies on the router when the power supply mode is load balancing.

Card power consumption

The power consumption of the cards varies by card model and state. Table 6 shows the power consumption for different card models.

·     The static power consumption of a card refers to the power consumed by the card under the following conditions:

¡     The card is running.

¡     All ports on the card are down.

¡     No transceiver module is available on the optical interface of the card.

·     The dynamic power consumption of a card refers to the power consumed by the card when all the ports on the card are fully configured and send broadcasts.

Heat dissipation

Heat dissipation is measured in BTU/h, and 1 W equals 3.4121BTU/h.

The heat dissipation of a router depends on its power consumption. To calculate heat dissipation of the router, assume 90% power consumption is converted to heat, and the efficiency of the power supply is 80%. Heat dissipation/hour of the router is 0.9 × (total power consumption of the cards plus power consumption of the fan tray)/0.8 × 3.4121.

Noise
