Chapter 8 Troubleshooting
Although the S7500 series have passed the comprehensive and strict test before delivery, faults may occur due to improper installation. This chapter describes how to handle the faults caused by improper installation.
On the SRPU of the S7500 series, you can find the status LEDs of the LPUs, power modules, and fan tray. You can check these status LEDs to locate the faults.
& Note:
The LEDs on the standby SRPU of the S7506R are always OFF except the SRPG LED. The SRPG LED on the standby SRPU is in the same state as that on the active SRPU. Thus, you need not consider the LEDs on the standby SRPU when troubleshooting power modules, fans, or LPUs.
8.1 Troubleshooting the Configuration System
If the configuration system is normal after it is powered on, the startup banner will be displayed on the configuration terminal. If the configuration system is faulty, the configuration terminal may display illegible characters or nothing at all.
8.1.1 No Display on the Terminal
If no information is displayed on the terminal after the switch is powered on, check whether:
l The power system works normally.
l The SRPU works normally.
l The console cable is connected to the console port in the SRPU.
If no problem is found after the above checks, check whether:
l The console cable is connected to a wrong serial port. (The port in use is not the one set on the terminal.)
l The terminal parameters are configured incorrectly.
These parameters should be configured as follows:
–Bits per second: 9600
–Data bits: 8
–Parity check: None
–Stop bits: 1
–Flow control: None
–Terminal emulation mode: VT100
l Something is wrong with the console cable.
8.1.2 Illegible Characters on the Terminal
If the configuration terminal displays illegible characters, it is very likely that the terminal parameters are incorrect. In this case, check them according to the correct configuration listed in section 8.1.1 “No Display on the Terminal” on page 8-1.
8.2 Troubleshooting the Power Supply
Table 8-1 Description of power LEDs
LED |
Status |
Description |
OK (Green) |
ON |
The power module works normally. |
OFF |
The power module is faulty or is not installed. |
|
FAIL (Red) |
ON |
The power module is faulty. |
OFF |
The power module works normal or is not installed. |
& Note:
If the FAIL LED on the S7503 is on, it is also possible that the power module is in position but the power switch is not turned on.
If the OK LED is off, something is wrong with the system power supply. Check whether:
l The power switch is turned on.
l The power cable(s) is properly connected.
l The voltage is correct.
8.3 Troubleshooting the Fan Tray
Table 8-2 Description of fan tray LEDs
LED |
Status |
Description |
|
OK (Green) |
ON |
The fan tray works normally. |
|
OFF |
The fan tray is faulty or is not installed yet. |
||
FAIL (Red) |
ON |
The fan tray is faulty or is not installed yet. |
|
OFF |
The fan tray works normally. |
||
If the OK LED is off, check whether:
l Each fan works normally.
l Something blocks the vents of the chassis.
l A blank panel is installed in the slot without a board.
8.4 Troubleshooting SRPUs and LPUs
The SRPG LEDs and LPUx (x ranges from 1 to 6 for the S7506 and S7506R, and from 1 to 3 for the S7503) LEDs respectively show the status of the SRPU and LPU.
Table 8-3 Description of board LEDs
LED |
Status |
Description |
|
RUN (Green) |
ON/OFF |
The board is faulty or is not installed yet. |
|
Blinking |
The board works normally. |
||
ALM (Red) |
OFF |
The board is faulty or is not installed yet. |
|
ON |
The board works abnormally. |
||
l If the ALM LED of a board is solid on, something is wrong with the board. When you reset a board, the ALM LED will be on, but will be off after it is started to work normally.
l When you reset a board, if the ALM LED stays off, the board may be disconnected from the power supply. Check whether the board is properly installed.
