Troubleshooting AP upgrade failures

Overview

This document describes how to troubleshot AP upgrade failures in a WLAN network based on AP upgrade methods.

Identifying AP upgrade methods

As a best practice, use the automatic upgrade method provided by ACs to upgrade APs. If you cannot upgrade APs by using automatic upgrade, upgrade APs manually from the BootWare menu.

Automatic upgrade from the AC

Before troubleshooting, identify whether the upgrade is an upgrade between different Comware platforms or within the same Comware platform.

·     The following upgrades are considered to be within the same Comware platform:

¡     Upgrade from one Comware 5 fit version to another Comware 5 fit version.

¡     Upgrade from one Comware 7 fit version to another Comware 7 fit version.

·     The following upgrades are considered to be between different Comware platforms:

¡     Upgrade from a Comware 5 fit version to a Comware 7 fit version.

¡     Upgrade from a Comware 5 fat version to a Comware 7 fit version.

Manual upgrade from the BootWare menu

Before troubleshooting, identify whether the upgrade is an upgrade between different Comware platforms or within the same Comware platform.

·     The following upgrades are considered to be within the same Comware platform:

¡     Upgrade from one Comware 5 fat/fit version to another Comware 5 fat/fit version.

¡     Upgrade from one Comware 7 fat/fit version to another Comware 7 fat/fit version.

·     The following upgrades are considered to be between different Comware platforms:

¡     Upgrade from a Comware 5 fat/fit version to a Comware 7 fit version.

Comware image files

In Comware 5, the image files (.bin files) for ACs and APs are separate in the software package.

In Comware 7, the image files (.ipe files) for ACs and APs are in packaged in the same IPE package file. After you load an IPE package file onto an AC, the AC automatically decompresses it to multiple IPE files and loads them after reboot to complete the upgrade of itself and APs.

A .btw file is used to upgrade the BootWare from the BootWare menu.

Troubleshooting failures of upgrade from one Comware 5 fit version to another Comware 5 fit version

1.     Use the display version command to identify whether the AC has been successfully upgraded. APs are upgraded only after the AC is successfully upgraded. If the AC fails to be upgraded, upgrade the AC again.

[AC] display version

H3C Comware Platform Software

Comware Software, Version 5.20, Release 2509P58

2.     Identify whether the correct AP image file has been uploaded to the AC. You can see the fit AP compability table in the release notes to view the correct image file for each AP model. For example, the .bin file for the WA4330-ACN AP is wa4300_fit.bin.

<AC> dir

Directory of cfa0:/

   0     -rw-   9061376  Jan 23 2017 14:25:54   wa4600_fit.bin

   1     -rw-   7759872  Jan 23 2017 14:25:12   wa4300_fit.bin

   2     -rw-   7971840  Nov 23 2016 18:30:50   wa4300s_fit.bin

If the bin file has not been uploaded to the AC, download the software package from the official website, decompress it, and upload the bin file to the root directory of the AC.

3.     Identify whether the software upgrade feature is disabled in system view, AP group view, or AP template view. If the software upgrade feature is disabled in any of the views, enable it in that view.

# Enable the software upgrade feature in system view.

<AC> system-view

[AC] wlan ap-firmware-update enable

# Enable the software upgrade feature in AP template view.

[AC] wlan ap ap1 model WA4320-ACN

[AC-wlan-ap-ap1] firmware-update enable

[AC-wlan-ap-ap1] quit

# Enable the software upgrade feature for APs in AP group office.

[AC] wlan ap-group office

[AC-group-office] firmware-update enable

4.     Delete the wlan apdb and wlan image-load filepath local commands if they have been executed.

5.     If you have uploaded an AP image file that is different from the AC image file in version, use the wlan apdb command to specify the version of the AP image file.

# Configure the mapping between software version R1508P08 and hardware version Ver.A of fit AP model WA4330-ACN.

<AC> system-view

[AC] wlan apdb WA4330-ACN Ver.A R1508P08

[AC] wlan image-load filepath local

If the software version you expect for an AP is consistent with the software version specified for the AP model stored in the APDB, you must delete the APDB user script and the wlan image-load filepath local command.

Troubleshooting failures of upgrade from one Comware 7 fit version to another Comware 7 fit version.

1.     Use the display version command to identify whether the AC has been successfully upgraded. APs are upgraded only after the AC is successfully upgraded. If the AC fails to be upgraded, upgrade the AC again.

2.     Identify whether the correct AP IPE file has been uploaded to the AC. The IPE files for APs is packaged in the IPE file for the AC. After the AC loads its IPE file, it automatically decompresses the IPE files for APs and saves them to the apimge folder. To identify whether the IPE files for APs exist on the AC, use the following commands:

# Access the apimge folder from the root directory.

<AC> cd apimge

# Display all visible files and directories in the apimge folder.

<AC> dir

The IPE package files for some AC series do not contain the IPE files for some AP models. For more information, see the release notes. To upgrade these AP models, download the IPE files from the official website and upload them to the AC.

3.     Identify whether the software upgrade feature is disabled in global configuration view, AP group view, or AP view. If the software upgrade feature is disabled in any of the views, use the firmware-upgrade enable command enable it in that view.

4.     Delete the wlan apdb and wlan image-load filepath local commands if they have been executed.

5.     If you have uploaded an AP image file that is different from the AC image file in version, use the wlan apdb command to specify the version of the AP image file.

Troubleshooting inter-Comware automatic upgrade failures

Troubleshooting failures of upgrade from a Comware 5 fit version to a Comware 7 fit version

NOTE:

·     An AP upgrade from a Comware 5 fit version to a Comware 7 fit version requires the upgrade of both the BootWare and Comware.

·     An AP will be formatted during the upgrade.

To troubleshoot an upgrade failure:

1.     Identify whether the IPE files for APs exist on the AC.

# Access the apimge folder from the root directory.

<AC> cd apimge

# Display all visible files and directories in the apimge folder.

<AC> dir

2.     Identify whether the software upgrade feature is enabled and whether a software-to-hardware mapping is configured. If the software version in the mapping is not the expected version, you must delete the mapping.

3.     Identify whether the AP registers with the AC across a Layer 3 network. If the AP registers with the AC across a Layer 3 network and cannot obtain the AC IP address through Option 43, you must log in to the AP, specify the AC IP address on the AP, and save the configuration.

# Specify the AC IP address 192.168.0.100.

<AP> system-view

[AP] wlan ac ip 192.168.0.100

[AP] save

NOTE:

If the AP version is old, the AP might fail to register with the AC because the AC IP address is deleted during formatting. In this case, downgrade Comware 7 BootWare to Comware 5 BootWare on the AP, install the latest Comware 5 version, and reconfigure the AC IP address. In new Comware 5 versions, the wlan ac ip command will be retained after formatting. For an old Comware 5 version, you can upgraded it to a new Comware 5 version and then to a Comware 7 version if you specify the AC IP address manually.

Identify whether the AP registers with the AC and comes online. If the AP comes online, the upgrade succeeds. If the AP does not come online, log in to the AP to identify whether the BootWare has been upgraded to Comware 7.

If the BootWare has been upgraded to Comware 7 but the AP fails to obtain the image file, troubleshoot the failure. If the BootWare fails to be upgraded to Comware 7, continue to troubleshoot the BootWare upgrade failure.

Troubleshooting failures of upgrade from a Comware 5 fat version to a Comware 7 fit version

Some APs might fail to be upgraded from a Comware 5 fat version to a Comware 7 fit version. As a best practice, change the AP from fat mode to fit mode. If you delete the image file for the fat AP and then power cycle it, the upgrade might fail.

Some AP models might fail to change from fat mode to fit mode. For example, if the WA2610H-Fat AP uses E1507P06 or earlier version, it will fail to change from fat mode to fit mode because its BootWare (1.03) cannot automatically download the fit-mode image file from the AC. The AP will restart repeatedly and cannot register with the AC. To solve the problem, first upgrade the AP to R1508P07 or a later version or manually upload the fit-mode image file to change the mode.
