Introduction
The following information provides an example for configuring rate limiting.
Prerequisites
This document is not restricted to specific software or hardware versions. Procedures and information in the examples might be slightly different depending on the software or hardware version of the device.
The configuration examples were created and verified in a lab environment, and all the devices were started with the factory default configuration. When you are working on a live network, make sure you understand the potential impact of every command on your network.
The following information is provided based on the assumption that you have basic knowledge of QoS.
Example: Configuring rate limiting
Network configuration
As shown in Figure 1, the router serves as the egress router on the enterprise network. Configure rate limiting to meet the following requirements:
· Limit the download rate of each host in the IP address range of 192.168.30.2 to 192.168.30.254 to 1000 kbps.
· Apply rate limiting to the interface that connects to the public network.
Software versions used
This configuration example was created and verified on R6749P14 of the MSR3610-X1 router.
Analysis
Use CAR-list-based traffic policing to perform rate limiting on the interface that connects to the public network on the router.
Procedures
# Assign IP addresses to interfaces.
<Device> system-view
[Device] interface gigabitethernet 1/0/1
[Device-GigabitEthernet1/0/1] ip address 200.1.1.2 24
[Device-GigabitEthernet1/0/1] quit
[Device] interface gigabitethernet 1/0/2
[Device-GigabitEthernet1/0/2] ip address 192.168.30.1 24
[Device-GigabitEthernet1/0/2] quit
# Create CAR list 1 to rate the limit of each host in the IP address range of 192.168.30.2 to 192.168.30.254. Traffic of the IP addresses does not share the remaining bandwidth.
[Device] qos carl 1 destination-ip-address range 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254 per-address
# Apply CAR list 1 to the inbound direction of GigabitEthernet 1/0/1, which limits the rate to 1000 kbps.
[Device] interface GigabitEthernet 1/0/1
[Device-GigabitEthernet1/0/1] qos car inbound carl 1 cir 1000
[Device-GigabitEthernet1/0/1] quit
# Configure a default route to the public network.
[Device] ip route-static 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 200.1.1.1
Verifying the configuration
# Display the CAR information for GigabitEthernet 1/0/1.
[Device]display qos car interface GigabitEthernet 1/0/1
Interface: GigabitEthernet1/0/1
Direction: inbound
Rule: If-match carl 1
CIR 1000 (kbps), CBS 62500 (Bytes), EBS 0 (Bytes)
Green action : pass
Yellow action : pass
Red action : discard
Green packets : 0 (Packets), 0 (Bytes)
Yellow packets: 0 (Packets), 0 (Bytes)
Red packets : 0 (Packets), 0 (Bytes)
The output shows that rate limiting is successfully applied to GigabitEthernet 1/0/1.
