Mounting the switch on a workbench

CAUTION

CAUTION:

·     Ensure 10 cm (3.94 in) of clearance around the switch.

·     Do not place heavy objects on the switch.

If a standard 19-inch rack is not available, you can place you switch on a workbench. The S5800-54S switch cannot be mounted on a workbench.

To mount the switch on a workbench:

1.     Make sure the workbench is clean and correctly grounded.

2.     Place the switch with bottom up carefully, and clean the round holes on the chassis bottom with dry cloth.

3.     Attach the rubber feet to the four round holes in the chassis bottom.

4.     Place the switch with upside up on the workbench.

Connecting the grounding cable

WARNING

WARNING!

Correctly connecting the switch grounding cable is crucial to lightning protection and EMS of a switch.

The S5800 switch models except the S5800-54S switch have one grounding point at their rear panels. The S5800-54S switch has three grounding points, as shown in Figure 19. H3C recommends that you use the primary grounding point for the S5800-54S switch.

Figure 19 Grounding points of the S5800-54S switch

(1) Auxiliary grounding point 2

(2) Primary grounding point

(3) Auxiliary grounding point 1

To connect the grounding cable:

1.     Connect one end of the grounding cable to the grounding point of the switch.

Figure 20 Connect the grounding cable to the switch

2.     To connect the other end of the grounding cable to a grounding strip:

a.     Cut the grounding cable to a length according to the distance between the switch and the grounding strip.

b.     Peel 5 mm (0.20 in) of insulation sheath from the end, and then insert the naked metal part through the black insulation covering into the end of the ring terminal.

c.     Secure the metal part of the cable to the ring terminal with a crimper, and then cover it with the insulation covering.

d.     Heat the insulation covering with a blow dryer to let it completely cover the metal part.

e.     Attach the ring terminal to the grounding post of the grounding strip, and then secure it with a hex nut.

Installing power modules

The S5800-32F, S5800-54S, and S5800-60C-PWR switches provide two power modules slots and support hot-swappable power modules. A power module can meet the power requirements of the switch. You can install two power modules for redundancy.

Table 5 lists the power modules available for these switches. For more information about the power modules, see H3C PSR150-A & PSR150-D Series Power Modules User Manual, H3C PSR300-12A & PSR300-12D Series Power Modules User Manual, H3C LSVM1AC650 & LSVM1DC650 Power Modules User Manual, H3C LSVM1AC300 & LSVM1DC300 Power Modules User Manual, and H3C PSR750-A & PSR750-D Power Modules User Manual.

CAUTION

CAUTION:

The two power modules on an S5800-60C-PWR switch can be of different types. Follow these guidelines to install power modules on an S5800-60C-PWR switch:

·     Do not install a 300 W power module (PSR300-12A, PSR300-12A1, PSR300-12A2, PSR300-12D1, or PSR300-12D2) and a 750 W power module (PSR750-A or PSR750-D) on the same S5800-60C-PWR switch.

·     Do not install a PSR750-A power module and a PSR750-D power module on the same S5800-60C-PWR switch.

·     To install a PSR750-A or PSR750-D power module on an S5800-60C-PWR switch, first remove the filler module in the power modules slot (as shown in Figure 28), and then install the power module as shown in Figure 29, which uses a PSR750-D power module as an example.

·     Before you install a PSR300-12A, PSR300-12A1, PSR300-12A2, PSR300-12D1, or PSR300-12D2 power module on an S5800-60C-PWR switch, make sure the filler module has been installed.

CAUTION

CAUTION:

Do not install a 650 W power module (LSVM1AC650 or LSVM1DC650) and a 300 W power module (LSVM1AC300 or LSVM1DC300) on the same S5800-54S switch.

If only one power module is installed, install the filler panel into another power module slot. Figure 30 uses an S5800-54S switch as an example.

Figure 30 Installing the filler panel on an S5800-54S switch

Before you remove a power module, remove the power cord from the power module.

To remove an LSVM1AC650 power module:

1.     Hold the handle on the power module with one hand, pivot the latch on the power module to the right with your thumb, and pull the power module part way out of the slot.

2.     Supporting the power module bottom with one hand, slowly pull the power module out with the other hand.

Connecting the power cord

CAUTION

CAUTION:

·     Connect the power cord after you install the power module in the switch.

·     Make sure the power module switch is turned off when you connect the power cord.

·     Connect the power cord to the switch before you connect it to the power source.

Connecting an AC power cord

To connect an AC power cord:

1.     Install a bail latch on the power module, as shown in Figure 32

2.     Pull the bail latch upwards, as shown in Figure 33. Then connect one end of the AC power cord to the AC receptacle on the switch.

3.     Pull the bail latch down to secure the plug to the AC receptacle.

Figure 33 Pulling the bail latch upwards

Figure 34 Connecting the AC power cord

No bail latch is provided with the LSVM1AC650 and LSVM1AC300 power modules. You can use a cable tie to secure the power cord to the power module handle, as shown in Figure 35.

Connecting the DC power cord

Connecting the DC power cord to a built-in power module

The DC power cords available for built-in power modules are classified as follows:

·     –54 VDC RPS power cord, which is connected as shown in Figure 36.

·     12 VDC RPS power cord, which is connected as shown in Figure 37.

Connecting the DC power cord to a hot-swappable power module

The DC power cord connection procedures are the same for the PSR150-D series power module and PSR300-12D series power module. Figure 38 uses a PSR300-12D1 power module as an example.

For the DC power cord connection procedures for a PSR750-D power module, see H3C S5800 Switch Series Installation Guide.

Installing an interface card

CAUTION

CAUTION:

·     When you install or remove an interface card, do not touch the surface-mounted components.

·     After you remove an interface card, install the filler panel into the slot immediately if no new interface card is installed in the slot.

Some S5800 switch models provide interface card slots. For the interface cards available for the switch, see H3C S5800 Switch Series Installation Guide. You can install interface cards as needed. For more information about the interface cards, see H3C S5820X & S5800 Series Ethernet Switches Interface Cards User Manual and H3C LSW1XGT2P0 & LSW1XGT4P0 Interface Cards User Manual.

CAUTION

CAUTION:

·     When you install or remove an OAP card, do not touch the surface-mounted components.

·     After you remove the OAP card, install the filler panel into the slot immediately if no new OAP card is installed.

The S5800-60C-PWR switch provides an OAP card slot and comes with a filler panel in the OAP card slot. You can install an OAP card as needed.
