Introduction
The system allows you to forward alarm messages to the specified email addresses, which helps you to learn the service and device messages through mails during the routine network and service management process.
Usage guidelines
Application scenarios
Use this feature when the system receives alarm messages but the maintenance staff is not on site. This feature promptly sends the system alarm messages to the maintenance staff via emails.
Prerequisites
· Only a user with the administrator permissions can configure the mail server and alarm forwarding rules.
· Make sure the mail server has been set up successfully and can access the mail sending ports, such as POP and SMTP.
· Make sure the mail client can send and receive mails normally through the mail server.
Configuration examples
Perform the following tasks:
1. Adding a mail account on the mail server
2. Configuring the mail server information
3. Configuring alarm forwarding rules
4. Verifying the configuration
Confirmation before configuration
The mail server configuration in this example is only for reference.
1. Confirm the mail account information added on the mail server. Typically, basic account settings include username, password, mail address, and enabling the account, as shown in Figure 1. The extended account settings vary by mail server.

2. Verify that related ports have been enabled on the mail server, as shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3.

3. Verify that SSL/TLS settings are not enabled on the mail server, because Unified Platform does not support SSL or TLS in the current software version. Typically, SSL/TLS is configured in advanced settings or in a separate configuration item. To enable SSL/TLS, you must first import the corresponding certificate.
Verifying that no SSL certificate is imported, as shown in Figure 4.

When multiple SSL certificates have been imported, you must cancel the certificates used as follows: cancel remote server SSL/TLS certificate verification, unselect multiple protocols, and unselect SSL usage for ports, as shown in Figure 5, Figure 6, Figure 7, and Figure 8.

DNS server configuration procedure
1. Log in to Matrix at https://Matrix_ip_address:8443/matrix/ui.
2. Navigate to the Deploy > Clusters page.
3. Click the Cluster Parameters tab, as shown in Figure 9.
4. To edit cluster parameters, click the Modify icon .
5. Select External DNS
Server, and click the Add DNS Server icon.
In the Add DNS Server dialog box that opens, enter
a DNS server IP address and a port number (53 by default), as shown in Figure 10.
6. Click Apply to configure the DNS server.
Configuring the mail server information
To send mail notifications, you must first configure the mail server correctly.
1. Log in to Unified Platform. On the top navigation bar, click System. From the navigation pane, select System Settings > Mail Server Settings to enter the page as shown in Figure 11.

2. Configure the following parameters:
¡ Server Address: Enter the domain name or IP address of the mail server. In this example, use the address of the mail server set up on the internal network.
¡ Server Port: Enter the port number of the mail server. The default is 25.
¡ Secure Connection (SSL/TLS): Select None to specify that secure connections are not used when the mail server is connected.
¡ Client Authentication: Specify the same client authentication state as that on the server. If client authentication is enabled on the mail server, you must also enable client authentication for the mail server in the system, and enter the sender's username and password. Otherwise, you do not need to select client authentication. Typically, the server does not need client authentication.
¡ Sender’s Email Address: Enter the mail address of the sender. In this example, enter [email protected].
3. Click Send Test Mail to identify whether the mail server is reachable and whether the specified username and password are correct, as shown in Figure 12.

NOTE: If the mail server cannot be accessed, the system continuously tries to connect to the mail server for a long time when you send a test mail. Then, the system prompts that it failed to send the test mail. |

4. Click OK to complete configuring the mail server.
Adding an alarm forwarding rule
1. On the top navigation bar, click Monitor. From the navigation pane, select Alarm > Alarm Forwarding Rules to enter the alarm forwarding rule page.
2. Click Add to enter the page for adding an alarm forwarding rule, as shown in Figure 13.

3. Configure the following parameters:
¡ Rule Name: Assign a name to the mail alarm forwarding rule. In this example, enter test.
¡ Forward Type: Select a forward type. If you select Forward Matching Alarms, alarms that match the forwarding rule are forwarded. If you select Forward Unmatching Alarms, alarms that do not match the forwarding rule are forwarded.
¡ Enable Duration-Triggered Notifications: Select whether to enable the Duration-Triggered Notifications feature. If you enable this feature, alarms that exist for the specified duration are forwarded.
¡ Alarm Severity Levels to be Concerned: Select one or multiple alarm severity levels to be concerned. Use the default settings in this example.
¡ Resources to be Concerned:
- If you select the All Resources option, alarms generated by all resources are forwarded.
- If you select the Selected Resources option, only alarms generated by the selected resources are forwarded. The following methods are available:
Select resources that have been added to the system.
Select resource groups. Selecting a resource group selects all resources in the group.
¡ Alarms to be Concerned:
- If you select the All Alarms option, all alarms are forwarded.
- If you select the Selected Alarms option, click Select. In the dialog box that opens, select alarms. Only the selected alarms are forwarded.

4. In the Action Settings area, click Email Forwarding. The Mail Forward window opens, as shown in 3.Figure 14. Configure the following parameters:
¡ Alarm Time: Select the All or Absolute Time Span option.
- Absolute Time Span: The system will forward only alarms generated within the selected time span. For example, if you set the time span to 00:00-23:59 for a day, all alarms generated on this day are forwarded. Use the default settings in this example.
¡ Alarm Duration: Set the alarm duration in minutes. The minimum value is 2. This parameter is required if you enable the Duration-Triggered Notifications feature. In this example, set the duration to 2 minutes.
¡ Mail Address: Specify the mail addresses for receiving alarm mails. You can specify one or multiple mail addresses, but you cannot add duplicate mail addresses. The mail address format is login_username@host_name.domain_name. In this example, enter [email protected].
5. Click OK to complete adding the alarm forwarding rule, as shown in Figure 15.
CAUTION: If an alarm matches multiple alarm forwarding rules, the alarm is forwarded by each matching rule. If the alarm forwarding rules matching an alarm contain the same mail address, cellphone number, or message template, the alarm information is sent for only once. |
Verifying the configuration
Viewing the mail box
After the configuration is completed, the recipient's mailbox will receive alarm messages matching the alarm conditions pushed by Unified Platform, as shown in Figure 16. After receiving the pushed alarm messages, you can log in to the platform to process the alarms.

Processing alarms
The platform displays the received alarm messages in a bar chart and on a list. The active alarm list displays all uncleared alarms and alarms cleared today. By default, the list displays alarms in the Active state.
1. Log in to Unified Platform. On the top navigation bar, click Monitor. From the navigation pane, select Alarm > Active Alarms to enter the active alarms page.
2. Find the alarm in the mail, as shown in Figure 17.
¡ If an alarm can be ignored or the failure represented by the alarm has been resolved, you can clear the alarm to change the alarm state from Active to Recovered.
¡ Acknowledge an alarm to record whether the alarm has been processed by the system or operator.
3. To view all alarms generated by an alarm source, click the link in the Alarm Source column for an alarm to enter the resource details page. Select All for the Status field to view all alarms generated by the specified alarm source on the list. On this page, you can acknowledge and clear alarms, as shown in Figure 18.

4. To view details of an alarm, click the link in the Alarm Info column for the alarm to enter the alarm details page. On this page, you can view the name, severity, alarming time, alarm cause, alarm OID, and alarm parameters of the alarm, as shown in Figure 19.
