Managing licenses

Overview

License-based features, such as MDC and EVI require a license to run on your device. To use a license-based feature, you must purchase a license or obtain a free trial license.

This chapter describes how to license a feature, transfer a license between devices, remove a license, and manage the license storage space.

License-based feature packages

The following are feature packages available for the device:

·           CAMPUS—Includes the MDC feature.

·           DATACENTER—Includes the EVI and MDC features.

For more information about these features, see EVI Configuration Guide and Virtual Technologies Configuration Guide.

To use features in these packages, you must register and install the feature package licenses.

Switches of this series also support the unified wired and wireless access controller feature. You can purchase licenses to increase the number of manageable APs. For information about the unified wired and wireless access controller feature, see H3C Unified Wired and Wireless Access Controller User Manual. For more information about the version compatibility between the unified wired and wireless access controllers and switches, see the release notes for the relevant software version.

NOTE:

To use the unified wired and wireless access controller feature on the device, you must load the WLAN feature package. For information about loading the WLAN feature package, see performing an ISSU by using install commands in "Performing an ISSU."

License types

The following types of licenses are available depending on validity period:

·           Permanent—A permanent license is always valid and never expires.

·           Days restricted—A license valid for a limited period in days, for example, 30 days.

Trial licenses are typically days restricted.

Locking methods

The following locking methods are available:

·           Device locked—A license can be installed only on the DID-specific device. The license takes effect on any MPU in the device even after an MPU replacement. The device supports this locking method.

·           MPU locked—A license can be installed only on the DID-specific MPU. The license takes effect on the MPU even after the MPU is moved to a different device.

Restrictions and guidelines

General restrictions and guidelines

When you manage licenses, follow the general restrictions and guidelines:

·           Make sure no one else is performing license management tasks on the device you are working with.

·           Manage licenses on the default MDC, and the licensed features will be licensed to the non-default MDCs automatically. Non-default MDCs do not support the license management. For information about MDCs, see Virtual Technologies Configuration Guide.

·           Trial licenses and expired formal licenses cannot be uninstalled. Expired licenses remain in the license storage area unless you compress the license storage area.

·           Licenses cannot be installed if the license storage area is not sufficient. Before registering licenses, use the display license feature command to identify the number of available licenses. Do not register licenses more than the available number.

·           After a license is activated, it takes 5 minutes for fiber ports that are bound to an IRF port to function correctly.

·           If you cannot obtain or re-register the activation file due to problems such as operating system and browser errors of the HTTP client, contact H3C Support.

License file safety

When you manage licenses, follow these restrictions and guidelines for license file safety:

·           Save and back up the obtained activation file in case of loss.

·           If you use FTP to transfer the activation file, use the Binary mode.

·           Do not open and edit the activation file to avoid file corruption.

·           Do not modify the name of the activation file to avoid licensing error.

·           Do not delete or move files in the flash:/license directory on a device. The license management feature uses this directory for license management. An incorrect file operation can cause problems. For example, if you delete an activation file that is usable or in use, the related feature will not function correctly. If a file is missing or corrupted, use the copy command to copy its backup file to the directory to recover the license. If the state of the recovered license is In use but not all licensed features can function, reboot the device. To verify the license state, use the display license command.

Licenses for different device types

Licenses for the unified wired and wireless access controller feature

You can use the licenses to control the maximum number of concurrent online APs. In an IRF fabric, you can install a license on any member device, but the AP can go online only through the master device.

The total number of concurrent online APs cannot exceed the sum of AP count allowed by licenses on all member devices. For example, the license on member device 1 allows a maximum of 10 concurrent online APs, the license on member device 2 allows 5, and no license is installed on other member devices. In this case, a maximum of 15 concurrent online APs are allowed in the IRF fabric.

If a member device installed with a license leaves the IRF fabric, its license is available for a 30-day grace period in the original IRF to ensure service continuity. Meanwhile, the license continues to take effect on the leaving device.

Licenses for features other than the unified wired and wireless AC feature

To run a license-based feature on a device in standalone mode, install the registered license. The device will copy the activation file to other MPUs on the device during installation.

When you register and install licenses for campus and datacenter feature packages in an IRF fabric, follow these restrictions and guidelines:

·           Install one license for the features on each member in the fabric. Make sure the SN and DID used for registering the feature license matches the current SN and DID of the specified member device.

·           A registered license takes effect on the member device where it is installed, and it is effective even after the member device joins another IRF fabric.

License consistency in an IRF fabric

License consistency and the concurrent online APs upper limit for the unified wired and wireless AC feature

You can install the unified wired and wireless AC license on any member device in the IRF fabric, and the license versions on the member devices can be different.

The maximum number of concurrent online APs in the whole IRF fabric cannot exceed the following limits:

·           The sum of AP count defined by licenses on all member devices.

·           The upper limit on the AP count supported by the master device.

License consistency for other features

For licensed features to function correctly in an IRF fabric, make sure all MPUs are installed with the same licenses.

Compressing the license storage

CAUTION

CAUTION:

If uninstalled licenses or expired licenses exist on the device, the compression operation will make the DID change. Before performing a compression, make sure all activation files generated based on the old DID have been installed. You will be unable to install such licenses after the compression.

When the value for the Total field equals that of the Usage field from the output of the display license feature command, the license storage area is full. To ensure sufficient storage space for installing new licenses, compress the license storage area.

To compress the license storage:

1.      Enter system view.

system-view

2.      Compress the license storage.

In standalone mode:
