NOTE: · Rack Unit (RU) is a measurement unit used to indicate the height of a rack. 1 RU is equal to 44.45 mm (1.75 in). · The dimensions are the dimensions of the chassis, excluding the dimensions of mounting brackets, cable management brackets, modules, power supplies, and other accessories. · For the weights and dimensions of modules, power supplies, fan trays, interface modules, and other removable components, see the descriptions for the components. |
System power consumption
The system power consumption of the switch depends on the type and number of modules and the fan tray power consumption.
· The minimum system power consumption is the total static power consumption of all modules plus the minimum fan tray power consumption.
· The maximum system power consumption is the total dynamic power consumption of all modules plus the maximum fan tray power consumption.
For example, for an S12516CR switch that has two LSXM1SUPKR1 SEUs, two LSXM1CMUR1 environment management modules, two LSXM1CGQ48KBR1 interface modules, six LSXM1SFK16GR1 fabric modules, and five FAN-80-9-A fan trays, the minimum system power consumption of the switch is 2 × 50 + 2 × 22 + 2 × 395 + 6 × 471 + 5 × 54 = 4030 W. The maximum system power consumption of the switch is 2 × 60 + 2 × 26 + 2 × 765 + 6 × 822 + 5 × 1105 = 12159 W.
Heat dissipation
The heat generated by the switch is closely related to its power consumption. It is typically assumed that 90% of the power consumption is converted to heat, and the power supply's conversion efficiency is 90%. Heat dissipation/hour of the switch is 0.9 × (total power consumption of the modules plus power consumption of the fan trays)/0.9 × 3.4121.
For the power consumption of the modules and fan trays, see "Modules" and "Fan trays."
The unit of heat is typically measured in BTU/h, and 1 watt is equal to 3.4121 BTU/h.

2 Modules
The switch supports varieties of modules that are different in power consumptions. For a module, its power consumption varies by its state.
· The minimum power consumption of a module refers to the power consumed by the module when it is running with all its ports down and its fiber ports not installed with transceiver modules.
· The typical power consumption of a module refers to the power consumed by the module when it is running with 50% of its ports connected and at 50% load.
· The maximum power consumption of a module refers to the power consumed by the module when it is running with all its ports connected and at full load.
|
|
NOTE: · For the transceiver modules or cables available for the modules, see H3C S12500CR Switch Router Series Type-K Modules and Transceivers Compatibility Matrix and H3C S12500CR Switch Router Series Type-S Modules and Transceivers Compatibility Matrix. · Module dimensions are expressed in Height (H) × Width (W) × Depth (D) format: ¡ Height—Height of the front panel of the module. ¡ Width—Width of the front panel of the module. ¡ Depth—Depth from the front panel of the module to the connector (including the connector, but excluding the ejector levers and captive screws). |

Module compatibility matrixes
The switch supports Type K and Type S modules. To avoid module damage or operation anomalies, do not install both types of modules on the same switch.
· Type K SEUs (for example, LSXM1SUPKR1) can be used together only with Type K interface modules (for example, LSXM1CGQ48KBR1), LSXM1CMUR1 environment management module, and Type K fabric modules (for example, LSXM1SFK08GR1).
· Type S SEUs (for example, LSXM3SUPRS2-G1) can be used together only with Type S interface modules (for example, LSXM3TGS48SF2), Type S environment management module (for example, LSXM3CMURS2-G3), and Type S fabric modules (for example, LSXM3SFS08F2).
When you use Type S SG interface modules, strictly follow the guidelines below:
· For the LSXM3CGQ48SG2 or LSXM3CCQ36SG2 interface module, follow these guidelines:
¡ On an S12508CR switch, the interface module can be used together with all Type S fabric modules and cannot be used together with the FAN-80-5-A fan tray.
¡ On an S12516CR switch, the interface module can be used together only with Type S Class H fabric modules and cannot be used together with the FAN-80-9-A fan tray.
· The LSXM4CGQ48SG2 interface module can be used together only with Type S Class K fabric modules and cannot be used together with the FAN-80-5-A or FAN-80-9-A fan tray.

Restriction and guidelines
To verify compatibility of modules with the software release you are using, see the release notes.
For the transceiver modules and cables available for the modules, see H3C S12500CR Switch Router Series Type-K Modules and Transceivers Compatibility Matrix and H3C S12500CR Switch Router Series Type-S Modules and Transceivers Compatibility Matrix.
SEUs
SEUs are the core component of the system control plane. You can install one SEU, or two SEUs for redundancy on the switch. Do not install SEUs of different models on the same switch.
You can access and configure the switch through the serial console port or the mini USB console port. Only one port is active at a time.
To connect a USB device to the module, make sure the USB device is in good condition.
Set the same speed and duplex mode for a management Ethernet port and its peer port.
If multiple management ports are connected to one remote switch, you must assign their peer ports to different VLANs on the remote switch. Then, you can transfer startup software images to the switch through TFTP or FTP.
Environment management modules
The environment management module is the system monitoring module of the switch. It can collect system running information and interact with the management system of the equipment room in real time to deliver highly reliable switch monitoring and management.
Table2-6 Module functionalities
|
Functionalities |
Description |
|
Smart monitoring and management |
· The module exchanges data with the management system of the equipment room in real time, improving energy management resiliency in the data center. ¡ The module monitors the switch temperature in real time, and adjusts the fan speed intelligently to avoid overtemperature. ¡ The module reports the power requirements of the switch in real time to the management system of the equipment room which will then adjust power supply accordingly to avoid power distribution system overload or underload or energy waste. · The module monitors the power consumption and power usage of the switch in real time and automatically powers on or off interface modules accordingly. · The module provides asset management and fault diagnosis. |
|
High availability |
The module is used in 1+1 redundancy with the other one. When the active module fails, the standby module takes over the services immediately. |
|
Maintainability |
The module reserves a COM port and two 10/100/1000BASE-T management ports (ETH) for future service expansion. |
The module comes with the system software installed. By default, the module starts up with the installed system software after it is installed on the switch.
The IPE file contains the software version for module upgrade. However, when you use the IPE file to upgrade the SEU, the module will not be upgraded. To upgrade the module, execute the boot-loader update command and then reboot the module by using the reboot command.
The module is used in active/standby mode with the other one. To upgrade the two modules, follow these guidelines:
· Before the upgrade, make sure the two modules are operating correctly, one in active mode and the other in standby mode.
· As a best practice, first upgrade the standby module and then the active module.
· The software versions of two modules might be different during the module upgrade process. Make sure the software versions of two modules are the same after the upgrade for high service availability.
Interface modules
The LSXM1MOD24KBR1 flexible line processing platform module supports various interface modules. For more information, see "Interface modules available for the LSXM1MOD24KBR1 flexible line processing platform module."
For the compatible transceiver modules or cables for the interface modules, see H3C S12500CR Switch Router Series Type-K Modules and Transceivers Compatibility Matrix, H3C S12500CR Switch Router Series Type-S Modules and Transceivers Compatibility Matrix, and H3C S12500R Switch Router Series Port Splitting and Compatibility With Transceivers and Cables.
Fabric modules
Before you install a fabric module, remove the protection box from it.
The fabric module slots are covered by fan trays. You must install the fabric modules before installing the fan trays. To remove a fabric module, first remove the fan tray that covers it.
Before you install a fabric module, press the buttons on the ejector levers to release them. After the fabric module is fully seated into slot, close the ejector levers. Before you remove a fabric module, press the buttons on the ejector levers to release them, open the ejector levers, and then pull the fabric module out of the slot.
Some fabric modules have air baffles. Before you install such a fabric module, make sure the air baffle is closed. After you remove a fabric module, close the air baffle.
Do not install fabric modules of different models on the same switch.
The fan tray in slot FAN5 covers only one fabric module. Only one of the two fabric module status LEDs on the fan tray works. For the fabric module status LED description on a fan tray, see "Fan trays."
To obtain the fabric module models on an operating switch, execute the display device command.

Type K environment management modules
The environment management module is the system monitoring module of the switch. It can collect system running information and interact with the management system of the equipment room in real time to deliver highly reliable device monitoring and management.
Table2-18 Module functionalities
|
|
|
|

3 Power trays and power supplies
The switch supports N+N (dual power inputs) or N+1 (single power input) power supply redundancy. Determine the number of power supplies based on the power supply mode and system power consumption. Make sure the maximum total output power of the installed power supplies is greater than the system power consumption. As a best practice, reserve a 20% power surplus. Ethernet twisted pair cable
Introduction
An Ethernet twisted pair cable contains four pairs of insulated copper wires twisted together. Every wire uses a different color, and has a diameter of about 1 mm (0.04 in).
Application scenarios
An Ethernet twisted pair cable typically transmits analog signals and is advantageous in transmitting data over shorter distances. It is the commonly used transmission media of the Ethernet.
Maximum transmission distance
The maximum transmission distance of the Ethernet twisted pair cable is 100 m (328.08 ft). To extend the transmission distance, you can connect two twisted pair cable segments with a repeater. At most four repeaters can be added, which means five segments can be joined together to provide a transmission distance of 500 m (1640.42 ft).
RJ-45 connector
An Ethernet twisted pair cable connects network devices through the RJ-45 connectors at the two ends. Figure5-4 shows the pinouts of an RJ-45 connector.
Figure5-4 RJ-45 connector pinout diagram
Cable pinouts
EIA/TIA cabling specifications define two standards, 568A and 568B, for cable pinouts.
· Standard 568A—pin 1: white/green stripe, pin 2: green solid, pin 3: white/orange stripe, pin 4: blue solid, pin 5: white/blue stripe, pin 6: orange solid, pin 7: white/brown stripe, pin 8: brown solid.
· Standard 568B—pin 1: white/orange stripe, pin 2: orange solid, pin 3: white/green stripe, pin 4: blue solid, pin 5: white/blue stripe, pin 6: green solid, pin 7: white/brown stripe, pin 8: brown solid.
Cable type
Based on performance
Ethernet twisted pair cables can be classified into category 3, category 4, category 5, category 5e, category 6, and category 7 cables based on performance. In LANs, category 5, category 5e, and category 6 are commonly used.
Table5-6 Description for commonly used Ethernet twisted pair cables

To ensure normal communication, the pins for sending data on one port must correspond to the pins for receiving data on the peer port. When both ports on the two devices are MDI or MDIX, use a crossover Ethernet cable. When one port is MDI and the other is MDIX, use a straight-through Ethernet cable. To summarize, straight-through and crossover cables connect the following devices:
· Straight-through cables connect devices of different types—For example, switch to PC and switch to router.
· Crossover cables connect devices of the same type—For example, switch to switch, router to router, and PC to PC.
If an RJ-45 Ethernet port is enabled with MDI/MDIX autosensing, it can automatically negotiate pin roles.
|
|
NOTE: The RJ-45 Ethernet ports on the switch support MDI/MDIX autosensing. By default, MDI/MDIX autosensing is enabled on a port. |
Making an Ethernet twisted pair cable
1. Cut the cable to a required length with the crimping tool.
2. Strip off an appropriate length of the cable sheath. The length is typically that of the RJ-45 connector.
3. Untwist the pairs so that they can lie flat, and arrange the colored wires based on the wiring specifications.
4. Cut the top of the wires even with one another and insert the wires into the RJ-45 connector. Make sure the wires extend to the front of the RJ-45 connector and make good contact with the metal contacts in the RJ-45 connector and in the correct order.
5. Crimp the RJ-45 connector with the crimping tool until you hear a click.
6. Repeat the above steps with the other end of the cable.
7. Use a cable tester to verify the connectivity of the cable.
Optical fiber

CAUTION: Use the same types of transceiver modules, pigtail cords, patch cords, and fiber cables. If you use single-mode optical fibers, the transceiver modules, pigtail cords, patch cords, and fiber cables must be single-mode. |
Introduction
Optical fiber
Optical fibers are widely used in fiber-optic communications, which are advantageous for long-distance communications.
Optical fibers can be classified into the following types:
· Single-mode fiber (SMF)—It has a core size of 10 µm or smaller, and has a lower modal dispersion. It carries only a single ray of light and is mostly used for communication over longer distances.
· Multimode fiber (MMF)—It has a core size of 50 µm, 62.5 µm, or higher, and has a higher modal dispersion than the single-mode optical fiber. It is mostly used for communication over shorter distances.

Optical fiber cable
An optical fiber cable is a cable containing one or more optical fibers. The optical fiber elements are typically individually coated with plastic layers and contained in a protective tube. Optical fiber cables can be classified into single-mode optical fiber cables and multimode optical fiber cables.
Patch cord
A fiber that has connectors at both ends is called a patch cord. A patch cord connects one optical device to another for signal routing. Patch cords can be classified into single-mode patch cords and multi-mode patch cords.
· Single-mode patch cord—The jacket is yellow. It permits transmission over longer distances.
· Multimode patch cord—The jacket is orange. It permits transmission over shorter distances.
Patch cords can be classified into SC, LC, and FC based on interface type. The length of a patch cord can be 0.5 m (1.64 ft), 1 m (3.28 ft), 2 m (6.56 ft), 3 m (9.84 ft), 5 m (16.40 ft), and 10 m (32.81 ft).
Pigtail cord
A pigtail cord is an optical fiber that has an optical connector on one end and a length of exposed fiber on the other. The end of the pigtail is fusion spliced to a fiber, connecting the fiber cable and transceiver.
Pigtail cords can be classified into single-mode (yellow) pigtail cords and multimode (orange) pigtail cords, and can also be classified into SC, LC, FC, and so on based on interface type.
Fiber connector
Fiber connectors are indispensable passive components in an optical fiber communication system. They allow the removable connection between optical channels, which makes the optical system debugging and maintenance more convenient. There are multiple types of fiber connectors. Figure5-7 and Figure5-8 show an MPO connector and an LC connector, respectively.
Precautions
· Make sure the fiber connector and fiber type match the transceiver module type.
· The fiber ports on the switch are provided with dust plugs. To prevent particles from entering the ports, insert the dust plugs into the fiber ports that you are not to use.
· Fiber connectors must be protected under safe and reliable outer packing, and be fitted with dust caps. Fiber connectors must be installed with dust caps when they are not in use. Take care not to scratch their end face. Replace the dust cap if it is loose or polluted.
· Before you connect an optical fiber, use dust free paper and absolute alcohol to clean the end face of the fiber connector. You can brush the end faces only in one direction.
· Never bend or curve a fiber during connection. After a fiber is installed well, the bend radius must be not less than 40 mm or 1.57 in (the minimum dynamic bend radius is 20 D, and the minimum static bend radius is 10 D. D indicates the outer diameter of dust caps).
· If the fiber has to pass through a metallic board hole, the hole must have a sleek and fully filleted surface (the filleting radius must be not less than 2 mm or 0.08 in). When the fiber passes through a metallic board hole or bend along the acute side of mechanical parts, it must wear jackets or cushions.
· Do not use excessive force when you insert or remove a fiber connector. Never pull, press, or extrude the fiber fiercely. For the allowed maximum tensile load and crush load, see Table5-9.
