Korea: Korea's Myongji College Improves Network Performance With H3C Solution

    09-04-2008

Background

Founded in 1974, Myongji College is one of the largest and top rated in South Korea. The college’s ‘2010 Myongji vision’ is a long-term development plan to sharpen competitiveness and improve the quality of education by 2010. Part of that vision is to bring the college’s faculty and administration into the information age and increase industry collaboration.

Myongji College’s IDC center manages web hosting and web server co-location services. As network traffic and service demands increased, the core switch in the IDC center was no longer able to sustain high levels of performance and stability. Myongji turned to its partner, H3C, to replace its aging core switch and improve the overall reliability and performance of its campus network.

Technology Solution

To boost the performance capabilities of Myongji College’s IDC center, H3C installed its S8505 (H3C S9505) series 10G multi-service core routing switch. The S8500 (H3C S9500) series switch is a new-generation switch that supports a high-speed 10Gbps interface card for low cost performance, carrier-class reliability (up to 99.999%) and the capacity to support abundant services.

The S8505 (H3C S9505) switch connects to the server farm via 1000Base-X links to provide L2 and L3 wire-speed packet forwarding to ensure steady, efficient connections. The S8505 (H3C S9505) gives Myongji’s web services the high reliability they require with its hot swappable, dual main control switching boards and 1+1 redundant hot backup mechanism. The S8505 (H3C S9505) switch also provides complete security management, a powerful QoS guarantee and interoperability with the other equipment in the college’s network.

In addition to upgrading Myongji’s IDC core network, H3C also installed numerous AR28-11 modular rack-mounted routers and S3928P-EI(H3C S3628P-EI)and S6503 (H3C S7503) Ethernet switches to be used as experimental devices for eight student teams as a part of the H3C Academy networking course. Myongji students are able to do experiments and gain practical working experience from H3C’s industry leading equipment.

Why H3C?

As a partner cooperating with Myongji College to develop a networking course to offer students real-world experience, H3C’s reputation for high quality products and industry leading solutions was well established.

When looking for vendors to upgrade their core switching gear, H3C was a natural choice as its products offered the performance requirements the IDC center needed along with improved security, management, interoperability and reliability at an extremely cost-effective price. H3C performed the upgrade quickly and efficiently backed by its leading support service team.

Benefits

The S8505 (H3C S9505) switch delivers the performance Myongji required while also providing improved reliability, high availability and complete security and management tools for reduced maintenance costs and lower TCO.

Myongji College anticipates increased recruitment of highly qualified students with the H3C Academy, as first-hand experience with H3C’s products can improve post-graduation hiring rates. H3C provided comprehensive training systems for Myongji’s students and easily transferable materials for college coursework. The first course began in April 2006 with 24 students, while upcoming H3C Academy courses at Myongji are planned for later this year.
