Customer Info
Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), founded in 1955, is now under China's Ministry of Education. BUPT is a key national university with distinctive teaching and research in the field of information and telecommunications, with engineering as its main focus. BUPT comprises 13 schools with 13,726 students.

The Challenge
There are several challenges faced with H3C-3Com to upgrade the old BUPT campus network. Firstly, the bandwidth needs to be evolved from the current 1G to 10G for the core network. Secondly, the user management system should be changed from open access to 802.1X authentication. Thirdly, the inherent threats to security in the current networks have to be tackled, and these threats include DHCP Server, Proxy Server and illegal IP addresses set without permission, etc. Lastly, the new BUPT network shall also support next generation IPv6.

Why H3C ?
As a professional E-education solution provider, H3C has extensive experience in offering reliable networking systems to meet all campus demands from small classrooms and offices to the most bandwidth-intensive departments, server farms and research facilities. H3C's full product range from core to access devices, comprehensive security solutions, future-proof products to support IPv6 and 10G switches answer the University's requirements for network upgrade.

Technology Solution
H3C considers all network requirements and conducts comprehensive test to define the network plan. In terms of user management, CAMS (Comprehensive Access Management Server) provides unified management on students' access to internet and authentication to control their internet traffic. CAMS can also work with H3C E series switches specific designed for education solutions to solve the network security problems. The network test has shown H3C switches' full support to 6 different multi-media services, as well as PVlan, 802.1X, confirming the feasibility of the new network plan.

NE40-8 core routers are deployed to provide powerful IPv6 solutions, and two sets of S8512 and one S8505 constitute the 10G core campus network. This tripod design enables a much powerful and reliable network.

The whole network is now fortified with 3 sets of S8500 series 10G switches, more than 10 sets of S6500 switches, nearly 100 sets of E series access switches and NE40 routers, as well as CAMS for user management.

The Benefits
The campus network is seamlessly upgraded with more powerful core switches connected through 10G lines, facilitating multi-media services and high security. H3C solutions deliver feature-enriched curricula, bandwidth-intensive multi-media applications and virtual learning environment for the BUPT. The course quality is enhanced and students can now enjoy more advanced learning features through the new network.
