Customer Info

Peking Union Medical College, founded in 1917, is a most renowned medical university in P.R.China, and the only medical university following an 8-year system. It has 18 research institutes (and 2 sub-institutes), 7 branches, 7 clinical hospitals (that includes the Temple of Heaven hospital jointly-constructed with Beijing) and 5 academic institutes. In addition, the College also has 7 national class key academic disciplines, 17 college class key disciplines, 3 national class key laboratories, 5 ministry and commission class key laboratories, 4 national class medicine production bases and research centers, 4 first class academic postdoctoral mobile stations and 9 World Health Organization cooperation centers.

The Challenge

The original network of Peking Union Medical College could no longer meet the needs for digitalized scientific research and education, thus creating a bottleneck to the college future development. The most impending problem is how to realize public sharing of information between various colleges, research institutes and laboratories to enrich the education methods and content. It is imperative to construct a high grade, high bandwidth, multi-services network to cope with the increasing network demand.

Why H3C?

H3C is able to offer a tailor-made solution after full scrutiny of the network situation in the campus. Based on the principle to achieve high reliability, cost-efficiency, optimum flow distribution, minimum transmission lag and easy management, H3C could provide an advanced, reliable and future-proof network topology to link up the LAN between the central unit of Peking Union Medical College and 5 other units within the campus.

Technology Solution

The campus core network was divided into 3 layers deploying S8016, S7506R, S5516, S3500 and S3000 series, as well as high output WLAN AP, etc. They are all open-end, compatible with current equipments, manageable and highly reliable. The brand new campus network supported IPv6 protocols; group broadcast routing and other next generation technologies for high expansibility. S3026E and S3050 guaranteed the end-to-end network security and realized unification in the whole network.

The network solutions had the following characteristics:

Flat network structure

The network is divided into 3 layers: core, convergent and access. A flat design reduces unnecessary network rings and data transmission lag. It is a typical high efficient topology that simplifies routing and switching.

Backup chain route design

At the same time a flat structure is adopted, all the core and important convergent facilities have back up networks. It not only enhances the reliability of individual device, but also ensures the security of the whole network and keeps breakdown to a minimum area.

Devices with high functionalities

All core, convergent and access networks in the whole campus are supported by devices with high switching power, functionalities and abundant services. This ensures quality in network services as provide end-to-end security in the campus network.

The Benefits

The improved network is a great step forward to help Peking Union Medical University to fully utilize the global data resources to develop national medical science studies. As the most renowned medical college in China, the improved network help Peking Union Medical College to continue its effort in training numerous specialists and experts as well as playing its significant role in driving the development of medical science in China.
