Hardware compatibility with Layer 2 and Layer 3 Ethernet interfaces
Interfaces operate differently depending on the hardware structure. For a device:
· Some Ethernet interfaces can operate only as Layer 2 Ethernet interfaces (in bridge mode).
· Some Ethernet interfaces can operate only as Layer 3 Ethernet interfaces (in route mode).
· Some Ethernet interfaces can operate either as Layer 2 or Layer 3 Ethernet interfaces. You can use the port link-mode command to set the link mode to bridge or route for these Ethernet interfaces.
Layer 2 Ethernet interfaces support Layer 2 features, such as MAC address table, port isolation, virtual local area network (VLAN), spanning tree, and more.
Layer 3 Ethernet interface supports Layer 3 features, such as static routing, Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-IS), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), and more.
When you execute the port link-mode command on an interface that supports link mode switchover, the command can be issued correctly. When you execute the port link-mode command on an interface that does not support link mode switchover, the system will print a prompt message.
Support of fixed interfaces on a device for link mode switchover varies by device model. If the device has interface modules installed, see the interface module manuals for information about the interfaces modules and their compatibility with link mode switchover.
