H3C Spearheads Liquid Cooling Technological Breakthroughs, Strives to Build New-Generation Green Data Centers

    06-12-2021

As a frontrunner in the innovation and upgrading of digital infrastructure, H3C, making the best of experience and achievements in intelligent computing, intelligent connection and intelligent storage, has constantly promoted the application of digital technologies in the designing and building of data centers and improved critical equipment including servers and switches by making innovations in liquid cooling technology. As a result, the company has made computing power more efficient, more reliable, eco-friendly, and more energy-saving and helped build new-generation green data centers for customers in various industries.

Building Green Data Centers through Innovations in Liquid Cooling Technology

While empowering smart applications and unleashing the value of data, data centers, as the most important infrastructure in the digital world that convert electricity into computing power in essence, have caused massive energy consumption.

In 2020, data centers across China consumed 70 billion to 80 billion kWh of electricity, which accounted for one percent of the country’s total electricity consumption, according to data from the China Data Center Committee (CDCC). Pushing ahead with the construction of green and low-carbon data centers is therefore an important step of China toward realizing its goal of peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060 as well as a major focus of task for H3C.

In an effort to further lower the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of data centers, H3C has released a data center thermal management solution, which increases the proportion of clean energy in the energy supplies of data centers on the one hand and lowers the PUE of data centers on the other. A key part of the solution is cutting the energy consumption of cooling devices and promoting the application of liquid cooling technology in data centers.

Direct liquid cooling system is becoming a mainstream choice for energy conservation-oriented transformation of data centers because of its many advantages over indirect liquid cooling system, including high reliability, low noise, recoverability of waste heat, and the fact that it is not affected by environmental factors.

As a leader in digital solutions, H3C has participated in the formulation of many industry standards and specifications for the design of liquid-cooled equipment rooms, made continuous investment and efforts in the research and development of cold plate liquid cooling and immersion liquid cooling, and developed a liquid cooling solution that is more suitable for high-power density data centers.

So far, the innovative liquid cooling technologies of H3C have helped the company to accomplish many exemplary data center projects.

H3C introduced advanced modular construction concept and helped China Life Insurance Company Ltd. build its main data center, which is also the first main data center of a large financial institution in China to obtain Uptime Institute’s Tier 4 certification.

In the construction of a data center for a Chinese search engine company, H3C has achieved a huge breakthrough of a PUE of lower than 1.2. The data center is estimated to save 220 million kWh of electricity a year, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 240,000 households, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 203,000 tons, becoming one of the most environmentally friendly data centers in Asia.

Creating Highly Efficient and Energy-Saving New-Type Network

H3C has not only applied liquid cooling technology in the optimization of computing power infrastructure including servers, but developed new-generation immersion liquid-cooled switches.

H3C is able to provide designs for cooling systems that combine liquid cooling and air cooling, satisfying the needs of different users and scenarios to the greatest possible extent. The ports of liquid-cooled switches are on the front panel of the products, so that they can accommodate the needs of installation, deployment and maintainability. Besides, H3C has also provided differentiated designs for core components such as heat sinks and optical modules according to the diverse needs of users.

To promote the green transition of a well-known Internet company, which needed to make its data centers more energy-saving and improve their energy efficiency ratio, H3C assisted the company with the construction and upgrading of its data centers with fully immersed liquid-cooled switches, and designed a new structure for its data centers based on the characteristics of the liquid-cooled environment, not only improving the data transmission efficiency of the data centers, but catalyzing their intelligent and green transformation and upgrading.

In the future, China’s liquid cooling data center market will enjoy an even stronger growth momentum, and the Internet industry will show a higher demand for data centers’ computing power.

As the country’s endeavor to enhance its strength in digital technologies puts forward high requirements for new digital infrastructure, H3C will continue attaching great importance to innovation input and leveraging its research and development capabilities to lead the all-round upgrading of digital infrastructure and help lay a solid foundation for the booming development of digital economy with more eco-friendly and more efficient and intelligent digital solutions.
