Chassis views and technical specifications

The H3C S12500X-AF Switch Series is a set of core switches designed for cloud computing data centers. It uses the advanced CLOS orthogonal switching fabric architecture to deliver the industry-leading switching performance, highest port density, richest cloud computing features, and highest availability.

Unless otherwise stated, MPUs, LPUs, and switching fabric modules are collectively referred to as "cards" in this document.

Chassis components

The device has an MPU section, service module section, power module section, fan tray section, and fabric module section. The following figure uses the S12516X-AF for illustration.

Installation description

MPU section

Pink color is used for you to identify the MPU installation location.

·     S12516X-AF, S12512X-AF, and S12508X-AF—The ejector lever pillow blocks on the MPU slots are pink marked. The MPU ejector levers are also pink marked to suggest the corresponding installation location.

·     S12504X-AF and S12502X-AF—The MPU slot numbers on the chassis are pink marked. The module identifiers on the MPUs are also pink marked to suggest the corresponding installation location.

NOTE:

The MPU section of an S12504X-AF switch is located below the LPU section.

An S12501X-AF switch has a built-in MPU, and does not require installing an MPU separately. An S12500X-AF switch has two MPU slots. You can install one MPU, or two MPUs for redundancy.

LPU section

The ejector lever pillow blocks on LPU slots are purple marked. The LPU edges and ejector levers are also purple marked to suggest the corresponding installation location.

·     S12516X-AF switch—16 LPU slots.

·     S12512X-AF switch—12 LPU slots.

·     S12508X-AF switch—8 LPU slots.

·     S12504X-AF switch—4 LPU slots.

·     S12502X-AF switch—2 LPU slots.

·     S12501X-AF switch—1 LPU slot.

Power module section

N/A

·     S12516X-AF switch—16 power module slots, with eight on each side of the chassis rear.

·     S12512X-AF switch—12 power module slots, with six on each side of the chassis rear.

·     S12508X-AF switch—8 power module slots, with four on each side of the chassis rear.

·     S12504X-AF switch4 power module slots, with two on each side of the chassis rear.

·     S12502X-AF switch4 power module slots, with two on each side of the chassis rear.

·     S12501X-AF switch—2 power module slots on the right of the rear panel.

The switch supports N+N and N+1 power redundancy.

Fan tray section

The fan tray section is located at the rear of the chassis.

Each fan tray on the S12500X-AF switch series, except for the S12501X-AF and S12502X-AF, covers three switching fabric module slots. The S12501X-AF and S12502X-AF switches are integrated with a switching fabric module and do not provide switching fabric module slots.

The S12501X-AF switch has three fan tray slots FAN1, FAN2, and FAN3. To ensure correct operation, install three fan trays for the switch.

The other S12500X-AF switch models each have two fan tray slots FAN1 and FAN2. The switch can operate correctly with one fan tray. As a best practice, install fan trays in both slots for redundancy and to reduce noises.

Switching fabric module section

The switching fabric module slots are behind fan trays. Each fan tray covers three switching fabric module slots.

The S12501X-AF and S12502X-AF switches have a built-in switching fabric module, and do not require installing a switching fabric module separately.

The other models come with all switching fabric module slots empty. Purchase two to six switching fabric modules for the switch. Purchase and install filler panels in the empty switching fabric module slots.

The S12516X-AF, S12512X-AF, S12508X-AF, and S12504X-AF switches use slots 18 to 23, 14 to 19, 10 to 15, and 6 to 11 for switching fabric modules, respectively.

·     To use an LSXM1TGS24FX1 LPU, the three lowest-numbered switching fabric module slots take precedence over other slots for module installation. For an LSXM1TGS24FX1 LPU to start up correctly, install a minimum of one switching fabric modules in the three lowest-numbered switching fabric module slots.

·     To use an LSXM1TGS48C2HB1, LSXM1TGS48HB1, LSXM1TGS48HF1, LSXM1CGQ6QGHB1, LSXM1CGQ6QGHF1, or LSXM1TGS24QGMODHB1 LPU, the three highest-numbered switching fabric module slots take precedence over other slots for module installation. For the LPU to start up correctly, install a minimum of one switching fabric modules in the three highest-numbered switching fabric module slots.

·     To use an LSXM1QGS24HB1, LSXM1QGS36HB1, LSXM1TGS48QGHA1, or LSXM1TGS24CGMODHD1 LPU, the four highest-numbered switching fabric module slots take precedence over other slots for module installation. For the LPU to start up correctly, install a minimum of one switching fabric modules in the four highest-numbered switching fabric module slots.

Before you remove a switching fabric module, remove the fan tray that covers it.

 

No cards, fan trays, or power modules are provided with the switch. Order them as required. For the cards, fan trays, and power modules available for the switch, see "FRUs and compatibility matrixes."

Module power consumption and system power consumption

Card power consumption

The power consumption of the cards depends on the card model and state. Table 9 shows the power consumption for different card models.

·     The static power consumption of a card refers to the power consumed by the card when the card is running but all ports on the card are down and when no transceiver module is available on the optical interface of the card.

·     The dynamic power consumption of a card refers to the power consumed by the card when all the ports on the card are link up and send broadcasts.

Fan tray power consumption

The switch uses fan trays that can automatically adjust the fan speed based on the device temperature. The power consumed by a fan tray depends on the fan speed.

System power consumption

The system power consumption of the switch depends on the type and number of cards and the fan tray power consumption.

·     The minimum system power consumption is the total static power consumption of all cards plus the minimum fan tray power consumption.

·     The maximum system power consumption is the total dynamic power consumption of all cards plus the maximum fan tray power consumption.

For example, for an S12516X-AF switch that has two LSXM1SUPB1 MPUs, two LSXM1QGS24FX1 LPUs, six LSXM1SFF16B1 switching fabric modules, and two LSXM116XFAN fan trays, the minimum system power consumption of the switch is 2 × 39 + 2 × 270 + 6 × 195 + 2 × 33 = 1854 W. The maximum system power consumption of the switch is 2 × 50 + 2 × 465 + 6 × 240 + 2 × 793 = 4056 W.

Heat dissipation

Heat dissipation is measured in BTU/h, and 1 W equals 3.4121 BTU/h.

The heat dissipation of a switch depends on its power consumption. To calculate heat dissipation of the switch, assume 90% power consumption is converted to heat, and the efficiency of the power module is 90%. Heat dissipation/hour of the switch is 0.9 × (total power consumption of the cards plus power consumption of the fan tray)/0.9 × 3.4121.
