Chapter 1  Product Overview

1.1  Overview

The Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) series products released by H3C include optical line terminal (OLT) devices and optical network unit (ONU) devices (EPON is a passive optical network implementation). By using optical splitters, Aolynk ET series ONU devices, and H3C S7500 series switches with the OLT (optical line terminal) function, you can set up EPONs to provide various optical accessing solutions, such as fiber to the home (FTTH) and fiber to the building (FTTB). In these optical accessing solutions:

l           The OLT devices can be H3C S7500 series Ethernet switches.

l           The ONU devices can be Aolynk ET series optical terminals or H3C S3100 series Ethernet switch with the ONU function.

1.1.1  System Description and Application

OLT devices can be deployed in the center office. As for the user side, you can use different ONU devices for different optical access solutions. OLT devices and ONU devices can be connected in the point-to-multipoint mode using POSs.

l           FTTB solution: Deploy the ONU devices (H3C S3100 series with the ONU functions) beside the power distribution box in a basement or connect ET300/ET300-L20 to the switch in the corridor, and then perform networking configuration based on actual requirements.

l           FTTH solution: Deploy ONU devices (ET204/ET204-L20) in user home according to user requirements.

l      Each EPON port supports up to 32 ONUs, and each OLT supports up to 1,408 ONUs.

Switching capacity: 96 Gbps (it can be upgraded to 768 Gbps); forwarding performance: 72 Mpps.

Switching function

l      4K VLANs.

l      VLAN VPN, also known as QinQ (ET204 and ET204-L20 only).

l      Each OLT supports 8K MAC addresses.

l      Layer 2/3 wires peed forwarding.

l      IEEE 802.3x-, IEEE 802.3ad-, IEEE 802.1D-, IEEE 802.1q-, and IEEE 802.1p-compliant.

l      Port mirroring.

l      Broadcast storm control.

AAA and security

l      Authentication based on the MAC addresses of ONU.

l      IEEE 802.1x.

l      Local authentication and RADIUS authentication.

l      Hierarchical system management and password protection

l      OLT ports support access control list (ACL), Layer 2/3/4 packet filtering (frame filtering based on ports, and source/destination MAC address; packet filtering based on source/destination IP address and upper-level protocol types).

l      Encrypted authentication using simple network management protocol (SNMP) v3.

l      Secure shell (SSH) 2.0.

l      Encryption of uplink/downlink (OLT/ONU) packets.

QoS

l      Traffic classification.

l      Bandwidth management in the granularity of 64 kbps based on ports, MAC address, IP address, TCP/UDP port numbers, type of service (TOS)/Diffserv values, and committed access rate (CAR).

l      Eight or four queues per port.

l      Queue scheduling algorithms, such as first in first out (FIFO) and priority queuing (PQ).

IP routing

l      Static routing.

l      Routing information protocol (RIP) v1/v2.

l      Open shortest path first (OSPF) v2.

l      Intermediate system-to-intermediate system intra-domain routing information exchange protocol (IS-IS).

l      Border gateway protocol (BGP) v4.

l      Four equal-cost routes.

Multicast

l      Internet group management protocol (IGMP).

l      IGMP Snooping.

l      Multicast VLAN Registration (MVR).

l      Protocol independent multicast-dense mode (PIM-DM).

l      Protocol independent multicast-sparse mode (PIM-SM).

Dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP)

DHCP Relay.

Huawei group management protocol (HGMP) features

Only H3C S3100 series Ethernet switches with ONU functions support this feature.

Load and update system software

l      Supports to load and update software by Xmodem protocol.

l      Supports to load and update software by file transfer protocol (FTP) and trivial file transfer protocol (TFTP).

System configuration/system management

l      Remote configuration and maintenance through a dialup modem on the AUX interface.

l      Chinese/English GUI.

l      Command line interface (CLI).

l      Configuration through the Console port and using Telnet and Modem dialup.

l      Network management system based on SNMP v1, v2, and v3.

l      Remote monitoring (RMON) with 1/2/3/9 groups of MIB.

l      System logs and alarms.

l      Software upgrading using FTP and TFTP.

l      Maintenance diagnostic tools including Ping and Tracert.

System maintenance

l      Supports filter, output and account of alarm/debugging information.

l      Supports Ping and Tracert.

l      Supports remote maintenance through Modem dialup and Telnet login.
