Manage storage adapters

Storage adapters

A host uses storage adapters to access different types of storage devices.

A host has a default local-SCSI storage adapter and a default open-iSCSI storage adapter. The local-SCSI storage adapter is used to access local disks. The open-iSCSI storage adapter is used to access iSCSI storage.

If the host is configured with hardware FC HBAs or FCoE HBAs (for example, CNA) for accessing FC storage, the storage adapter list also displays detailed information about the FC HBAs or FCoE HBAs.

The system also supports software FCoE adapters. The FCoE protocol stack of the host performs protocol processing for software FCoE adapters, and the NIC performs FCoE forwarding. FCoE adapters must work with NICs that support data center bridging and FCoE offload.

Multipath

If multiple paths exist between a host and a SAN storage, traffic can be switched to an available physical link when any element in the SAN network fails, for example, an adapter, switch, or cable. Besides link switchover, the paths can load balance the traffic to reduce or even eliminate potential bottlenecks.

By default, the system applies the multipath policies defined by vendors to their respective storage devices. The system provides four multipath policy types, including most recently used, fixed, round robin, and optimal. You can choose a multipath policy according to the type of a storage device and enable the multipath policy feature on the storage device.

You can configure multipathing for different storage pools on a host as follows:

Storage adapter scanning

Operators can scan storage adapters on UIS Manager to discover available LUNs after carving LUNs and configuring LUN mappings on storage servers. To discover the LUNs on block storage that are assigned to a host, you must add the corresponding storage pools on the host. If UIS Manager cannot discover the LUNs on FC storage for a host, reboot the host.

Storage adapter management allows operators to add and delete software FCoE adapters, configure the multipath policy for a storage adapter, and scan storage devices for storage adapters.

Restrictions and guidelines

Add a software FCoE adapter

  1. On the top navigation bar, click Hosts. If the system has multiple clusters, select a cluster from the left navigation pane.

  1. Select the target host, and then click the Hardware Configuration tab.

  1. Click the Storage tab.

  1. Click Add.

  1. Click the 28.png icon. In the dialog box that opens, select a physical interface and click OK. For more information about the parameters, see "Parameters."

  1. Click OK.

Delete a software FCoE adapter

  1. On the top navigation bar, click Hosts. If the system has multiple clusters, select a cluster from the left navigation pane.

  1. Select the target host, and then click the Hardware Configuration tab.

  1. Click the Storage tab.

  1. Click the Delete icon  for an FCoE adapter.

  1. In the dialog box that opens, click OK.

Configure the multipath policy for a storage device

  1. On the top navigation bar, click Hosts. If the system has multiple clusters, select a cluster from the left navigation pane.

  1. Select the target host, and then click the Hardware Configuration tab.

  1. Click the Storage tab.

  1. Click the Edit icon  for a storage device.

  1. Configure the multipath policy parameters as described in "Parameters."

  1. Click OK.

Perform a device scan

  1. On the top navigation bar, click Hosts. If the system has multiple clusters, select a cluster from the left navigation pane.

  1. Select the target host, and then click the Hardware Configuration tab.

  1. Click the Storage tab.

  1. Click the Scan icon  for a storage adapter, or click Scan All.

  1. Configure the scan mode as described in "Parameters."

  1. Click OK.
