Create an IDV desktop pool

Perform this task to create an IDV desktop pool for deployment of desktops that are accessible to one dedicated user, multiple users, or anonymous users.

Prerequisites

Make sure you have completed the following tasks in Space Console:

• Add hosts and cluster resources.

• Add users.

• Create desktop images.

• Add authorization policies.

Procedure

1. From the left navigation pane, select Desktop Pools & Groups.

2. Click the Desktop Pools tab.

3. Click Create.

4. Select the IDV desktop type, configure basic desktop pool information, and then click Next: Login Info. By default, a desktop pool is not assigned to any desktop pool group. If you create a desktop pool in a desktop pool group, the desktop pool is assigned to that group.

5. Configure settings for desktop login, and then click Next: Configuration.

6. Configure the desktop pool, and then click Next: Confirm Configuration.

7. Verify that the desktop pool configuration is correct, and then click Finish.

Parameters

• Authorization Type: Select an authorization type. The following are available options:

• Dedicated User: To have each desktop accessible to only one user account, select this option. With this option, you must bind each desktop client to one user.

• Multiple Users: To allow multiple users to share a desktop, select this option. With this option, you bind the entire pool to users or user groups. Then, the selected users and user groups can access any idle clients in the pool. 

• Anonymous Users: To allow anyone to access an IDV desktop as a guest without having to provide user account information, select this option. With this option, you do not need to bind users or user groups to the pool or clients.

• Desktop Prefix: Specify the prefix in the names of the desktops that are deployed from desktop images. The deployed desktops will be named in prefix-random_number format.

• Authentication User Type: Select a user type.

• Local Users: To create desktops for local users and LDAP users, select this option. To authorize desktops in a desktop pool of this user type to LDAP users, you must also select a generic LDAP authentication server as the authentication server.

• Domain Users: To create desktops for AD users, select this option. In addition, you must select a Microsoft Active Directory authentication server as the authentication server.

• Authentication Server: Select an authentication server.

• For local users, if you do not select an authentication server, the desktops in a desktop pool can be authorized to only local users in Space Console. If you select a generic LDAP authentication server, the desktops in a desktop pool can be authorized to only users managed by the specified server.

• For domain users, select a Microsoft Active Directory authentication server.

• SSO Password Type:

• Authorized User: Users log in to their desktops by using their assigned usernames and passwords.

• Fixed Login Name:

• Login Account: Configure the account used to log in to a desktop from a client. The password used for login is the password of the account assigned to a user.

• Fixed Login Name and Password:

• Login Account: Configure the account used to log in to a desktop from a client.

• Fixed Password: Configure the password used to log in to a desktop from a client., A user can access a desktop without entering any password if you leave this field empty.

• Restoration Mode: Select a mode for restoration of a desktop to its initial state. ARM hosts do not support these parameters.

• Not Restore: To prevent the system from restoring the desktop system image on a client to its initial state when the user session ends or the desktop restarts, select this option.

• Full Restore: To restore the full desktop image on a client to its initial state when the user session ends or the desktop restarts, select this option.

• System Restore: To restore the desktop system disk of a client to its initial state when the user session ends or the desktop restarts, select this option. A system disk refers to a logical disk loaded when you install an operating system on a desktop image. The logical disk will be restored when you restore the system disk. If you have partitioned the system disk when you install the operating system, all data on the partitions such as drive D and drive E will also be restored.

• Offline Graceful Period: Set the amount of time that a user can continue to use an IDV client after the IDV client goes offline because of network disconnection or disconnection from Space Console.

• Configure: Select a resource flavor for IDV endpoints from the general, predefined, and custom flavors.

• General: Select this flavor if the target endpoints are not in the recommended endpoint list or do not match any other flavor. The CPU and memory resource quantities of an IDV desktop are set to be consistent with the hardware specifications of the connected endpoint.

• Edit Data Disk Capacity: Select whether to resize the data disk of IDV endpoints. This parameter is available only for the general flavor. If you resize the data disk, the system sets the data disk size to the configured value for the IDV endpoints whose virtual memory size is different from the configured value. If you do not enable this parameter, the system does not resize the data disk size of IDV endpoints.

• Data Disk Capacity: Set the size of the Winswap disk on IDV endpoints, in GB. This disk provides virtual memory. You can increase the data disk size to expand the virtual memory and save user data depending on the application scenario.

 

After modification of the data disk capacity of IDV endpoints assigned to the desktop pool, Space Console pops up a dialog box for you to confirm whether to format the data disk. Please make sure you are fully aware of the impact of this operation. For endpoints assigned to the desktop pool, restart the endpoints, enter delete in the dialog box that opens, and then click OK to format the data disk, Then, the endpoints will be restarted, and the modification of the data disk capacity is completed. To avoid disk data loss on endpoints when you format the data disk, back up data in advance. You can skip the data disk formatting actions by clicking Next in the data disk formatting dialog box. But the skipping operation can be performed 3 times at most, after which the reboot or registration for the endpoint will forcibly format the data disk.

 

• Select Image: Select an IDV desktop image for bulk deployment of desktops in the pool.

• OU: Specify the distinguished name (DN) of the organizational unit (OU) to which the domain users belong on the specified authentication server. This option is required if you configure the pool for domain users. When you specify this option, use the ou=value,dc=value,dc=value format. For example, to specify the test OU in the example.com domain, enter the ou=test,dc=example,dc=com string. If you do not enter a DN or select an OU, the desktops will be assigned to the container named Computer on the domain controller. If you enable trust domain configuration for the authentication server and do not enter a DN or select an OU, the desktops will be assigned to the OU of the domain tree.
