With continuous increase in Internet users and development of video conferencing and large file transmission, demands for network bandwidth grow day by day, to which optical access is definitely the best solution. Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) combines the widely used Ethernet technology with PON, addressing the point-to-multipoint Ethernet access issue.
The EPON series products launched by H3C include Optical Line Terminal (OLT) devices and Optical Network Unit (ONU) devices. The EPON series can provide optical access solutions, such as “fiber to the home” (FTTH) and “fiber to the building” (FTTB). Also, they apply to the triple-play implementations (convergence of video, audio and data communications) in big-sized enterprises.
The H3C S3600 Series EPON OLT Switches (referred to as the S3600 OLT series hereinafter) are Ethernet switches developed by H3C. The S3600 OLT series, the H3C S7500E series and the EPON series line processing units (LPU) can deliver the EPON OLT function, and operate as intelligent campus access and distribution layer switches in high-performance Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs).
The S3600 OLT series include the following models as shown in Table 3-1.

Deploy an OLT (an H3C S3600 series EPON OLT switch or an H3C S7500E series Ethernet switch with an EPON LPU) at the center office, and deploy ONUs (ET254-L/ET704-L) at user home based on users’ requirements. Then carrier can manage the entire EPON system.
l The OLT is connected to a distribution Layer 3 switch or core router through a GE interface or multiple GE trunk ports on the uplink.
l The OLT is connected to EPON ONU devices through EPON OLT ports on the down-link.
l The OLT is connected to the ONUs through a Passive Optical Splitter (POS) in point-to-multipoint mode.

OLT devices (H3C S3600 series EPON OLT switches or H3C S7500E series Ethernet switches with an EPON LPU) can be deployed in the center office. As for the user side, you can use different ONU devices for different optical access solutions, (Deploy the H3C S3100 series Ethernet switches with the ONU function beside the power distribution box in a basement or connect ET300/ET300-L20 to the switch in the corridor), and then perform networking configuration based on actual requirements. Then the carrier can manage the entire EPON system.
l The OLTs are connected to Layer 3 distribution switches or core routers through GE interfaces or GE trunk ports on the uplink.
l The OLTs are connected to EPON ONU devices through EPON OLT ports on the down-link.
l The OLTs are connected to the ONUs through splitters in point-to-multipoint mode.
