1.1 Q: What are the H3C MSR series routers?
A: MSR is the abbreviation of Multiple Service Router. By integrating data, voice, security, switching and user-oriented open services, this series of routers is the one really integrating multiple services. As the next generation of low-end and mid-range router products launched by H3C, it will provide new services and scalability capabilities for customers.
1.2 Q: How do the H3C MSR series compare to the R/AR series routers? And what are the main features of MSR series?
A: As a new series of routers introduced based on R/ AR series from H3C, MSR series would be put in the same position as R/AR series. It is still subject to low-end and mid-range routers and intended to the core of SMB and branches as well as the aggregation layer or the edge access layer of carrier networks. The following are? main features of MSR series routers:
New software architecture: With Comware 5 from H3C, MSR series provides a full support of IPv6 and backward compatibility with IPv4. It not only supports the existing software features of Comware 3 but also provides more abundant functions and features, meeting the demanding requirements of various networking scenarios and service deployments.
Smoothly scalable and advanced hardware architecture: This series of routers separates resources from services for higher resource utilization and investment protection. The built-in encryption engine can enhance encryption and meet increasingly rigorous security demands. Time Division Multiplex (TDM) slot switching function can bring higher local call competition rate and quality. High-density voice boards, crypto-accelerator boards and switching boards can improve performance and service integration. Use of common pinch cards and common LPUs makes it possible to seamlessly integrate diverse services modules later. In addition, a variety of extended services are available and new storages like USB and CF Flash are supported.
Integration of multiple services: By combining security, switching and voice services, this series of routers improves the integration of multiple services. For example, it provides leading and innovating network security functions in the industry. As a result, you can realize a comprehensive integration of LAN switches and deploy voice gateways flexibly and conveniently.
OAA-Open Application Architecture: It publishes software and hardware interfaces and standards specifications and provides an open platform. So the third party vendors can develop a rich of services for advantage complementation, deep integration, cooperation and two-win.
High performance/price ratio: By using the latest technologies in the industry, faster network processors and high integrated chipsets, this series of routers improves IP forwarding, service processing and data encryption performances greatly while expanding interface density and strengthening software functions and services integration.
Intelligent and auto-sensing network: This series of routers comes with quality analysis tools. You can dynamically adjust configuration according to the real network status, so as to provide a portfolio of solutions, such as service auto-sensing, security auto-sensing, reliability auto-sensing and intelligent management.

At the same time, interface modules and software functions developed on the new series of routers can meet the application requirements of users at present and in the future, realizing investment protection in the future.
Novel and fashionable appearance: This series of routers mixes popular and fashionable elements in appearance design. Modem and simple, it stands out internal and external values properly.
1.3 Q: With the introduction of H3C MSR series routers, what are the plans for the current AR series routers?
A: MSR series is the modular routers of low-end and mid-range series routers developed by H3C. It is compared to AR28/46 series in AR series. Although there may be a case that the position of MSR series in a network coincides with AR 18 series, but the former has no corresponding relationship with the latter. That is, sale of MSR series will not affect AR18 series greatly for different form and position. AR series modularized routers use Comware 3 version to support IPv4 protocol. A rich of features, stable products and a large of installation base, some AR series customers and those customers who have no demand on IPv6 at present will still use and purchase AR series routers. In this case, H3C will continue the sale and maintenance of AR series modularized routers at least 18 months, and provide additional software features according to real circumstances till there is no need on AR series in the market. In short, you do not need to worry about the sale and maintenance of AR series routers.
1.4 Q: What are the basic models and sub-series for the H3C MSR series? And what are the relevant hardware interface and specifications?
A: According to product performance and position, MSR series is divided into three sub-series in ascending order: 20, 30 and 50 series. The following illustrates their model, interface and module slot respectively.

1.10 Q: H3C MSR series integrates multiple services, what aspects do they mainly include?
A: MSR series comes with feature-rich routing and forwarding to meet the communications of data services. It also boosts multi-services integration in a higher level especially in terms of security, switching, voice and open services. Users can implement MSR series routes as security gateway, voice gateway; routing & switch integrated device and open service platform freely, facilitating applications and investment protection.
1.11 Q: Please introduce the integrated security services of H3C MSR series briefly.
A: MSR series supports a rich of VPN services and firewall functions. MSR series supports three kinds of IP VPN technologies:? L2TP, GRE and IPSec, as well as MPLS VPN and VRF functions, guaranteeing the implementations of mainstream VPN technologies in the industry. For IPsec encryption, MSR series provides supports for several hardware acceleration functions in addition to software encryption algorithm. With these functions and solutions, MSR series ensures successful implementations of security applications. There are the following hardware acceleration solutions:
Hardware encryption engine is embedded in CPU.
- The main CPU of MSR series has embedded in hardware encryption engine.
High performance hardware encryption module HNDE.
- MSR 30/50 supports MIM HNDE encryption module. MSR 50 also supports FIC HNDE encryption module.
High performance hardware encryption ESM pinch card.
- The whole series of MSR routers supports optional hardware encryption ESM pinch card, improving encryption capability greatly.
1.12 Q: Please introduce the integrated Ethernet switching services of H3C MSR series briefly.
A: Routing and switch integration now is a trend in the industry. Integrating Ethernet switching function on routers has many advantages and features as follows:
- The principal part is still the router. Additionally, existing features of the router like rich route, security and QoS are kept, satisfying diverse application requirements of users well. A single switch cannot do that.
- By combining Layer 2 switch organically, you can enable router functions while meeting the requirements of using router products to build a LAN to enable Layer 2 data switching.
- The router and the switch are integrated in a physical device. This can reduce fault points, improve reliability and save physical space occupied by two devices.
- The router and the switch are integrated into an organic system for consistent management, including SNMP and WEB network management. This can bring higher manageability and maintenance convenience.
As the next generation of multi-service integration router, MSR series is of great advantages with regard to switch services integration as follows:
- MSR series integrates switch modules physically. It also combines powerful switch service platforms and switch features from H3C, guaranteeing the consistency and synchronous development between the service features offered by the switch modules of MSR series and switch series from H3C.
- With the support of a rich of switch modules, MSR series now supports three kinds of interface cards: SIC, MIM and FIC. It also supports many interface specifications, such as 4 interfaces, 9 interfaces, 16 interfaces and 24 interfaces. Switch modules with higher interfaces will come into the market soon.
- In addition, the switch modules of MSR series support POE, further expanding the application implementation capability and flexibility.
1.13 Q: Please introduce the integrated voice services of H3C MSR series briefly.
A: The ability of MSR series to deploy voice services is also improved greatly.
- MSR series supports the voice modules of original R/AR series routers, including 1/2/4-port FXS, FXO and E&M modules as well as high density 1/2-port VE1/VT1 voice modules. Where VE1/VT1 is a centralized solution. That is, DSP and TDM are fully integrated into this voice module.? MSR series keeps the features and compatibility of original modules, facilitating use and investment protection for users.
- To improve interface density and flexibility of voice implementation, MSR series provides a new high density voice separated solution. That is, MSR series separates DSP and TDM switching functions of VE1/VT1 high density voice modules from other voice interface modules, and deploys them on the main board as shared resources. This solution also supports 1-way and 2-way high density access on a voice module. As a result, voice implementation flexibility is improved and investment cost is saved.
- The number of module slots of MSR series itself is higher than R/AR series. Coupled with high-density voice modules and voice separation solution, this increase the voice interface density of MSR series. In case of full configuration, MSR series can provide up to 480-way voice access.
- Voice features and supported protocols are also enhanced. Now MSR series supports H.323 and SIP protocols. Furthermore, it provides feature-rich functions.
1.14 Q: Please introduce the integrated open services of H3C MSR series briefly.
A: MSR series supports Open Application Architecture (OAA). It publishes software and hardware interfaces and standards specifications and provides an open platform. So the third party vendors can develop abundant services for advantage complementation, deep integration, cooperation and two-win. In short, it integrates common desktop or server systems as router modules into MSR series routers. The router provides power supply, communication and management interfaces as well as standards-based open application interfaces, making it more simple and convenient for users or third-party to integrate services.
1.15 Q: H3C MSR series supports USB and CF card, what are the main functions?
A: MSR series supports CF card and USB. From the perspective of basic function, they all provide external storage function on the router, for example, store system files, configuration and system log files and so on. Unlike the system files and configuration of R/AR series routers which are stored in Flash, the system files of MSR series routers are stored in CF card. So MSR series routers come with CF card by default for this function. MSR series has USB interface to support the use of U-type disk. You can use U-type disk to read/write files from/to the router.? With the prevalence of CF card and USB interface as well as higher storage capacity and lower hardware cost, the use of U-type disk can be extended easily later. For example, you can use the information stored in U-type disk as key start and control system, and store system log files and security log information in U-type disk or CF card.
1.16 Q: What are the features of H3C MSR series in term of Reliability?
A: MSR series has inherited the reliability of R/AR series that is guaranteed by hardware and software two aspects.?
MSR series uses VRRP redundant backup to enable hot backup among two or more MSR devices, and guarantee the interoperation of devices from different vendors as the VRRP protocol is a public standard.
By leveraging a flexible and perfect backup center mechanism, MSR series provides outstanding backup function for communication lines. By specifying a primary interface and corresponding backup interfaces, and adjusting the parameters of backup interfaces like backup preference and switch time, the backup interfaces can take on its work when the primary interface failed without affecting carried services, and thus improving the reliability of communication lines.
MSR series uses dynamic standby of routing from H3C. As a new backup mode, it uses traditional DCC (only supporting polling DCC) function to dynamically maintain dial-in lines, i.e. routing-based dial-in backup. With the aggregation time and relevant features of dynamic routing protocols, this function integrates backup and routing functions well. At the same time, it breaks through the limitation that tradition DCC triggers dial-in by detecting Interesting packet flows, and provides reliable connections and standardized dial-in on demand services.
MSR series uses auto-detect technology, which leverages ICMP request/response packets to detect the reachability of destination. The results are fed back to linked backup function modules initiating primary/secondary switching to provide backup function based on the reachability of the network layer applications. This solves the shortage where you must detect the physical UP and Down changes of interfaces or the network layer protocols to initiate primary/secondary switching.
MSR series uses quick rerouting technology. By solving such issues as long rerouting effect time and high packet loss ratio, it has improved the existing rerouting technologies at a large extent. In addition, quick rerouting function is also supported in MPLS services for high reliability.
MSR 50 series supports hot-swappable boards, fans and power supplies, improving the reliability of physical devices. MSR 30 series supports dual-power with an external power.
1.17 Q: What kind of memory does the H3C MSR series use? And what is its default memory configuration?
A: The MSR 20 series routers use SDRAM with default memory 256M and maximum memory 384M, MSR 30 series routers use DDR with default memory 256M and maximum memory 1G. MSR 50 series routers use DDR with default memory 512M and maximum memory 1G.
