Log Overview

1.1  Brief Introduction

During running of the equipment, the log module in NE software records all running conditions to form log messages.

The log messages are mainly used to view running status of the equipment, analyze the network condition, and locate causes of issues, so as to lay basis for system diagnosis and maintenance.

The log messages can be displayed via the console port or in telnet mode. The log can be saved on the equipment or output to the log server using the syslog protocol.

1.2  Log Format

The syslog protocol uses port 514 of UDP for transmission. Any UDP packet on port 514 is deemed a log message, which starts with symbol “%” and is output in the following format:

Output format of a log message

Fields in the above figure as described as follows:

l           TimeStamp

This field indicates time of the log sent to the log host, which is of date type and in the "Mmm dd hh:mm:ss yyyy” format.

“Mmm” is the abbreviated from of a month, for example, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov and Dec.

“dd” indicates the date. If the date is smaller than 10, you must fill in “space + date”, for example, “ 7”.

“hh:mm:ss” indicates the local time, in which “hh” ranges from 00 to 23 in the 24-hour system, and both “mm” and “ss” range from 00 to 59.

“yyyy” indicates a year.

TimeStamp is separated from HostName by a space.

l           HostName

This field indicates the system name of the local equipment, which is “H3C” by default.

HostName is separated from ModuleName by a space.

l           ModuleName

This field indicates the module that generates the log. It is separated from Severity by a forward slash (/).

l           Severity

Log messages are defined to eight severity levels, numbered 1–8.

Severity is separated from Brief by a forward slash (/).

l           Brief

This field tells you the rough meaning of the log message.

Brief is separated from Arise From Description by a colon (:).

l           Arise From Description

This field is a character string output by each module to the information center and is filled in by each module during the output to provide details of the log.

Below is an example.

%Aug  6 20:34:46 2005 S9500 HWCM/5/EXIT: exit from configure mode

This information tells you that the log is generated at 20:34:46 on August 6, 2005, the host name is S9500, the log is sent by the HWCM module, the severity level of the log is 5, and the log says exit from the configuration mode.
