Chapter 1  Product Overview

Quidway AR 18-2X Series Routers, developed by Huawei Technologies, are oriented to Small Office Home Office (SOHO) users. They include AR 18-20/18-20S/18-21/18-22/18-22-24/18-23S-1/18-22S-8/18-21A/18-21B models.

Currently, Quidway AR 18-2X Ethernet Routers consist of three types in terms of LAN interface density:

l   The AR 18-20/18-20S/18-21/18-22/18-21A/18-21B (four LAN interfaces by default)

l   The AR 18-22S-8 and AR 18-22-24 (8 or 24 switched LAN interfaces), and the AR 18-22-24 has the densest LAN interfaces.

l   The AR 18-23S-1 supports four independent Layer 3 Ethernet interfaces and hardware encryption as well, providing high forwarding performance.

Quidway AR 18-2X Series Routers are Ethernet access routers, and provide 10BASE-T or 10/100BASE-TX interface in the uplink direction and 10/100BASE-T Ethernet interface in the downlink direction. The interfaces provide Layer 2 data exchange and can implement port isolation. In addition, the built-in hardware encryption chip of the AR 18-20S greatly enhances the encryption performance.

Chapter 2  Product Features

2.1  Network Security

Quidway AR 18-2X Series Routers provide abundant network security features, such as firewall, packet filtering, network address translation (NAT), authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA), and callback. Hence, users can select different security policies to build enterprise networks.

2.2  VPN Function

Intranet virtual private network (VPN) interconnects the geographically dispersed branches of a company via public networks, as an extension and replacement of traditional leased line networks and other enterprise networks. Access VPN provides secure tunnels for small-sized users like SOHO to access the resources of company headquarters via PSTN/ISDN. Extranet VPN extends the enterprise networks to the business partners and clients, and enables different companies to communicate securely and privately over the public networks. Quidway AR 18-2X Series Routers are mainly used at the access end of VPNs.

2.3  Command Line Interface

The command line interface (CLI) of Quidway AR 18-2X Series Routers can be configured in common ways. No special training is needed for users.

2.4  Ethernet Access

Quidway AR 18-2X Series Routers provide 10/100MBASE-T Ethernet WAN interface. By configuring point-to-point protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE), hosts in LAN can access the Internet via Ethernet, and the monitoring and accounting functions can be implemented on every access host. Therefore, Quidway AR 18-2X Series Routers are cost-effective and widely used in the construction of campus broadband networks.

2.5  Chassis

Electromagnetic shielded plastic chassis, which the AR-3x Series Routers adopt, has not only a smooth external appearance and small size, but also can effectively shield electromagnetic interference from various sources to make the system work more stably and reliably.

Chapter 4  Networking Applications

4.1  Networking Application of Ethernet Access

l   Quidway AR 18-2X Series router is connected to the carrier access equipment in the uplink direction and to the LAN via the 10/100BASE-T interface.

l   Quidway AR 18-2X Series router is configured with functions such as PPPoE server and AAA/RADIUS. Every PC in the LAN is configured with the PPPoE client software, username and password, implementing the authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) function.

l   For the routers with dual Ethernet interfaces in the uplink direction, the Ethernet interfaces can implement uplink bandwidth bundling, load balancing and link backup.

4.2  Networking Application of IPSec VPN

As the access routers of the branches, Quidway AR 18-2X Series Routers allow all the branches to communicate with headquarters via the leased line. To ensure the communication security, you may use IPSec to encrypt data.

The IPSec VPN is applicable to the secure communication between branches and headquarters only. Applying it between branches can result in geometrical explosion of encrypted tunnels, making it hard for the administrator to configure and maintain devices.

4.3  Networking Application of DVPN

Dynamic VPN (DVPN), a supplement of the traditional VPN, is suitable for the secure communication between headquarters and branches. A router in the headquarters serves as the server and Quidway AR 18-2X Series Routers in branches as clients. They can be interconnected through dial-up or the leased line and the clients belonging to the VPN can access each other. This solution greatly reduces the maintenance cost and makes the network more flexible. In addition, the authentication and encryption features of DVPN ensure the network security.

l   The routers in the branches are connected to the router in the headquarters via the leased line or dial-up.

l   The routers in the branches are configured as DVPN clients and the router in the headquarters as the DVPN server, thus making all the nodes in the VPN accessible.

4.4  Networking Application of BIMS

SNMP is used to implement centralized management in large networks. This is a top-down management, that is, the central node provides all the management. The load of the centralized management increases with the number of branches. In addition, SNMP network management has difficulty in managing dynamic IP addresses or the devices behind a NAT gateway.

To solve this problem, branch intellectual management system (BIMS) has been developed. This solution can be applied to a leased line network, minimizing the maintenance cost and improving management efficiency.

l   The routers in the branches use the leased line or dial-up to connect to the router in the headquarters. The public or private IP address can be configured on the router or can be obtained dynamically.

l   The BIMS Server runs on the server in the headquarters to manage all the routers in the branches.

 


Chapter 5  Ordering Guide

Quidway AR 18-2X Series are SOHO users-oriented low-end routers independently developed by Huawei Technologies. All interfaces on the routers have standard configurations, and 12 VDC power supply is adopted. Users can purchase the router and cable assembly as needed.
