A port profile is a set of network management features, such as ACL, VLAN, and QoS settings.
After you apply a port profile to the NIC of a VM, the VM and the virtual switch attached to the VM perform the following operations:
The virtual switch uses the ACL in the port profile to process the VM traffic that matches the ACL.
The virtual switch assigns the interface connected to the NIC to the VLAN in the port profile.
The VM limits incoming and outgoing traffic of the NIC based on inbound and outbound traffic limits in the port profile.
The NIC accesses the network based on the network priority in the port profile.
Use port profiles when network access control and rate limiting are required for a VM.
Apply a port profile—Apply a port profile to a VM. For more information, see "Edit a VM."
From the navigation pane, select Data Center > Virtualization.
Click the Port Profiles tab.
Click Add.
Configure the basic parameters, and then click Next.
Configure the traffic limiting parameters, and then click Finish.
ACL: Select the ACL used in the port profile.
VLAN ID: Enter a VLAN ID. After you apply the port profile to a VM NIC, the virtual switch port attached to the VM NIC is assigned to the VLAN.
Inbound Limit: Limit the traffic from a virtual switch to a VM.
Average Bandwidth: Enter the average inbound bandwidth in Kbps.
Burst Buffer: Enter the inbound burst buffer in KBytes.
Outbound Limit: Limit the traffic from a VM to a virtual switch.
Average Bandwidth: Enter the average outbound bandwidth in Kbps.
Burst Buffer: Enter the outbound burst buffer in KBytes.
Network Priority: Select the priority used in VM bandwidth assignment when a host’s traffic is dense.
If you modify a port profile that is in use by VMs, the modifications take effect immediately on virtual interfaces of the VMs.
From the navigation pane, select Data Center > Virtualization.
Click the Port Profiles tab.
Click Edit for a port profile.
Edit the parameters as described in "Parameters," and then click Finish.
You cannot delete the port profile named Default or a port profile in use by VMs.
From the navigation pane, select Data Center > Virtualization.
Click the Port Profiles tab.
Click Delete for a port profile.
