Manage VM states

You can perform the following tasks to manage VM states:

• Start a VM—Starts a VM.

• Shut down a VM—Shuts down a VM. The system saves the data before shutting down the VM.

• Power off a VM—Forcibly powers off a VM.

• Suspend a VM—The data in the memory of a VM is retained after the VM is suspended.

• Restore a VM—Restores a VM in suspended state.

• Hibernate a VM—Hibernates a VM in running or suspended state. When you hibernate a VM, the system saves the data in the memory into the hard disk as files, and then powers off the VM to hibernate it.

• Restart a VM—Restarts a VM when the VM fails or when configuration changes, such as CPU, memory, or disk scaling, occur on the VM.

Restrictions and guidelines

Powering off a VM will cause data loss and might cause guest OS failure. As a best practice, shut down the VM from its guest OS.

Whether a VM can be shut down successfully depends on the OS of the VM. Therefore, the actual state of the VM might be different from that displayed in CVM.

Start a VM

1. From the left navigation pane, select Resources > Host Pool Name > Host Name > VM Name or Resources > Host Pool Name > Cluster Name > Host Name > VM Name.

2. Click Start.

3. In the dialog box that opens, click OK.

Shut down a VM

1. From the left navigation pane, select Resources > Host Pool Name > Host Name > VM Name or Resources > Host Pool Name > Cluster Name > Host Name > VM Name.

2. Click Shut Down.

3. In the dialog box that opens, click OK.

Power off a VM

1. From the left navigation pane, select Resources > Host Pool Name > Host Name > VM Name or Resources > Host Pool Name > Cluster Name > Host Name > VM Name.

2. Click Power Off.

3. In the dialog box that opens, click OK.

Suspend a VM

1. From the left navigation pane, select Resources > Host Pool Name > Host Name > VM Name or Resources > Host Pool Name > Cluster Name > Host Name > VM Name.

2. Click More, and then select Suspend.

3. In the dialog box that opens, click OK.

Resume a VM

1. From the left navigation pane, select Resources > Host Pool Name > Host Name > VM Name or Resources > Host Pool Name > Cluster Name > Host Name > VM Name.

2. Click More, and then select Resume.

3. In the dialog box that opens, click OK.

Hibernate a VM

1. From the left navigation pane, select Resources > Host Pool Name > Host Name > VM Name or Resources > Host Pool Name > Cluster Name > Host Name > VM Name.

2. Click More, and then select Put to Sleep.

3. In the dialog box that opens, click OK.

Restart a VM

1. From the left navigation pane, select Resources > Host Pool Name > Host Name > VM Name or Resources > Host Pool Name > Cluster Name > Host Name > VM Name.

2. Click More, and then select Restart.

3. In the dialog box that opens, click OK.
